    Default Strop 'Cupping'

    Hi,

I have noticed my new Dovo 'Prima Rindleder' strop has what I've heard being called 'cupping'.

To know what I mean, please check out the photo here.

As you can see, there's a small indentation in the middle of the strop so not all the blade touches the leather.

It was suggested to me that I run the leather side of the strop back and forth along a glass bottle or a rounded counter top.

Does anyone have any experience with this, or can they explain the process? I'd like to research this a little more before I go rubbing my $100 strop on things

    Thanks in advance
    Sam

It appears I made the cardinal sin of not searching a forum before posting a question.

My question has been partially answered in a few posts.
    Including this one.

I'd still appreciate any advice on fixing this. I've removed the strop from the bathroom (my Black Beauty doesn't cup from the steam. Possibly because the leather is so thick on the Black Beauty)

    Cheers

I have the same DOVO strop, and to be honest I wasn't too happy. After about a liter of oil to actually make it supple I've found it's not too bad. Still longing for a TM in red latigo, but shipping hassles overseas are holding me up. My Tosukes were impounded for a couple weeks in customs until they could figure out what they were haha.

Yeah, so the point of all that was....without the leather being well conditioned I don't think you can compress it all that well with a bottle. But post your results if you do, I highly doubt anything is going to happen to your strop by using smooth glass against it.

I would have suggested what Tony Miller stated in your reference thread. I don't think you can get a better recommendation than from a guy whose business is manufacturing strops.

    Hey,

    Thanks for all your input.

Since I took my strop out of the bathroom and laid it flat on a table overnight, it's flattened out nicely and is now flat!

From what I've seen, it must be the humidity in the bathroom that cupped the strop. I'll keep it out of there from now on.

Thanks for all the advice (including the linked thread above)

A point to note with Dovo strops is that the D ring can be bent which can make the strop cup when pulled tight. Just check the D ring before you condemn it or buy another strop. If the D ring is bent, straighten it or bend slightly further in the opposite way to make it stress the strop correctly. It worked for me on one of mine along with a lot of hand massage to soften the leather. Steer away from oil on the strop till you need it and not because threads here say you do.

I happened to notice this in my dovo strop last week. Figured I would search before I started another thread and came across this one and the reference thread from the original poster.

Took it out of the restroom and gave it daily hand rubbings along with reverse cupping it with my hands before doing the rubbing and it flattened right out. Wanted to say thanks to the posters from 3 years ago lol.
