Synthetic Strop + Review?

Hey all,

I noticed that Tony Miller has a 3" vegan/synthetic strop on his site that I'm kinda interested in; I found an old-ish thread where a 2" was being reviewed but it looked like that thread kinda died...

I was wondering if anyone since then has used his synthetic strop and has any comments on it as a regular/daily use strop. It would probably be my first one. I had read that the drag is supposedly intense and that the canvas strop was a little softer than what is considered "normal". Has anyone who has used it found any good ways to work with these things? Any thoughts, suggestions, or alternatives would be great; I'm looking at this one because of it's lower price, and higher durability. I'm all for the non-animal source too.:w

I'd be interested to know as well. I just jumped on the Artisan for lack of info about the synthetic one as well.

There was a review "pre-crash" about these but being such a specilized item there are not that mnay of them out there.

The drag is higher than a leather strop but if one never owned a leather strop you would learn quickly how to use it, where as coming from a leather strop a little lighter "negative" pressure may be needed.

The canvas it identical to our standard cotton/canvas we used for years, and yes, fairly coarse......you either love it or you hate it <g>.

The "Vegagon" Artisan styled one can be had with Genuine linen which is a smooth weave.

I know Tony won't say it, but I recall the review for the Vegan strop was really complimentary, and many SRP members considered it a "go-to" as their travel strop since it won't be damaged by bending or water - and everyone, almost universally, said that if they were to choose a non-leather alternative for personal reasons, they'd not lose out on much, if anything, from the leather version.

I think any product you'll get from Tony is well worth the money and of the highest quality...just my $0.02 though.

I just want to add, my 2" synthetic starter/travel strop came today, and while the draw took a few moments to get used to, I think it's my favorite. Had one heck of a smooth shave off of it. The synthetic strop's a nice success, IMO.
Like Milton says, any strop from Tony is going to be good.
Can't wait till his vacation's over, I'm getting that 4-sided paddle. :)
