I don't know about canvas or linen, but I made my own paddle strop from a piece of 1x4 red oak and 4" leather from Tandy. Contact cement to attach it, lightly sanded to smooth it, then finished it with some Wilson glove oil I had in the closet. Pasted one side w/CrOx and it works like a champ. Good cheap starter strop - someday I'll splurge on a nice TM and see what I've been missing :)
I've made a few of strops with latigo leather from HandAmerican (1st choice). I've also used belt blanks from here (2nd choice): Belt Blanks and Latigo leather Straps The only thing is their belt blanks are 72" long (scroll to the bottom of the page). Hope this helps.
Putting together a crude but usable cowhide hanging strop is very easy and inexpensive. A strip of leather, a punch, a grommet and you're done. Making a more aesthetically pleasing strop with nice hardware and a great nubuck or hand rubbed finish......in my experience, the payoff is worth it, but it's surprising how much time, effort and elbow grease it really takes to make a great strop. From start to finish, unless you have it down or a planned production routine, we're talking hours from start to finish. I have great respect for Tony Miller and the level of quality of his higher end strops.
