Treating a Paddle Strop

I am going to be buying a paddle strop to paste so I can refresh the edge. Do I need to treat the leather with a conditioner before I put my CrO on it?

Somewhere on here I was talking about mixing Cr with Neats Foot oil, that's how I put it on the strop, so you are doing both at the same time....
I actually keep a small bottle of the mix in a bottle that I got for an AS sample that will probably last for years....

Thanks. I was watching Lynn's CD and puts a few drops of the diamond paste on it (but he also said that using CrO or diamond paste was a personal choice). However, he didn't say whether or not the strop needed to be treated first.:shrug:

Diamond paste is a different animal, it comes already in a carrier, that seems to me, to be just a strop conditioner, (the amplex tubes) I gotta say I would condition the leather first, even through I personally have not had this dilemma yet....
Maybe Tony Miller will weigh in here with a more expert opinion.....

I don't think you have to condition the strop unless it is old and very dry. A new paddle has leather in great condition. Once you apply the paste you can't really recondition it anymore anyway so why even bother.

you dont need oil or conditioner on a new paddle strop, i just take a little pinch of cro and sprinkle it on the strop, and rub it around with dry hand, untill you get it spread all over really well then i take a paper towel and start removing it wiping in all directions, untill no more will come o,ff a new paddle will have good leather on it

I suggest not treating it as well. Mix the chromium with a little Lexol or just rub it in dry. You really only want a thin, transparant layer, embedded into the surface of the leather.

The typical Amplex pastes, whether in syringes or little containers as I sell are water based and will not hold as well if applied over oil or wax treated leather which rules out most strop or leather dressings.

i used mineral oil with the cro ox. nothing with the diamond past. worked fine in my case. different people get such different results, sometimes, you just gotta try.
