Hi all, I've got a spare strop 'hanging' around and was thinking of using it for a pasting strop with Chromium Oxide Paste and was wondering which side to apply it too? leather or linen?
Cheers

I have seen it applied to the linen but I prefer it applied to leather.
I Have both, I have one for traveling where its applied to the back side of the leather. And I have a strop where it' applied to the front or smooth side of the strop. I don't notice much difference between either one after using.
I wouldn't paste a hanging strop. The slight bowing the strop does, even when held very taut, would round the edge. If you must use such a strop, I recommend you lay it flat on the counter rather than hang it. Better still, get a paddle strop.

I have both, and both work fine. I've got an old canvas strop with Chromium oxide on one side, and it gives good results. I've also got a horsehide leather strop with chromium oxide on the back of the leather. Like Damon, I prefer the leather. I'd put the paste on the back of the leather, so that you can still use the front for stropping if you ever need.
I agree with X completely as that's been my experience. I especially found it true before I had become proficient at stropping. Slack and chrome ox = rounded edges.
You can't really fault the chrome ox; it's doing exactly what is does exceptionally well; the only problem is it's doing it to the edge when strop slack comes into play and all we want to do is polish the BEVELS.

For daily use finishing directly before the shave, I prefer a hanging strop. I do have a paddle strop which I use for travel and it works well, it just requires a steadier hand.
