Thanked: 2would this work for canvas side of strop
I have some heavy upholstry fabric that is canvas would this work for a strop? I am not sure what type of canvas is usually used or how heavy or if it is treated with anything. Just thought I might as well use what I have lying around sort of recycle it so to speak.

Thanked: 3795Well, some people use denim for a strop so it's likely to be usable.

I'm sure anything would work to be honest, as long as it's flat. I would just be careful on it, since it might be rougher than a regular canvas/linen. I would just use as light a touch as I could on it, but I'm sure it'll work just fine. Some people strop their razors on belts and on their own skin, so there's obviously more than one way to do it!

I think if it is nice and flat without knots in the yarn it should be OK.

Thanked: 2Thank you all for your help its really fairly smooth with no knots. Just thick about the same feel to it as denim as far as roughness goes. I will test it with a light light touch to see how it goes.

I used some canvas from an old knapsack- now its on a paddle- double thick because 1 layer felt too hard. Then I soaped it. The razor audibly zips up and down. it's definitely doing something, but what I have no idea.
For hanging I think you would need to make a laminate, using cloth stuffs

Thanked: 2canvas
Thank you I was thinking of cutting it into strips and maybe 5 or 6 thick then sewing along the top and bottom to secure them together without stitching the sides so there is nothing the razor could hang up on.
