Strops-What do you like??

I have been looking at some of my old strops lately and it got me thinking about what other people look for either in hardware for strops or handles or no handles...... The older vintage strops I have made by different companies are very similar and many don't have handles at all. Some do and the shapes of the handles are pretty similar too. Then there are the D rings and the short handle on the Old Dog strops. The hardware similarities of the old strops was pretty cool too.

So, what kind of handles do you like and why? Do you like no handles? Any particular hardware trip your trigger?

Certain things are a must have when it comes to my strops, besides the leather....
It has to have an actual handle, and that handle has to attach so that the bottom of the strop is straight, and not have the ability to bow...
It has to have a swivel clip to hang from, and the heavier duty the better..
I personally prefer some type of Linen strop attached to it also...

The LSA, pictured at right, is a strop I would stay away from. It looks like it's made to cup if you try pulling it taut...

I like those fancy metal attachments, and prefer them over riveted leather.

Well, as I only have one strop, I can't really speak to difference, but here's an interesting thing--the one strop I DO have, made by Kanayama in Tokyo, is pretty much identical in hardware and stamping to the one in your second and 4th photos, third from the right; except where yours says "310" mine has "1200", and the stamp on the handle is not gold embossed on mine. Also, it obviously doesn't say "Jocken".

I actually like the vintage style of strop without the handle personally. I have a Hand American strop like that. I also have a TM that I took the handles off and basically just use the D Ring. But I do prefer no handle.

I used to like the no handle straight cut strop like the old barbers used. Still do but since I have gotten onto this forum and experimented with new technology I find I like the kind that has the metal with the handle attached. I like a 2 1/2 wide strop better then the 3".

I have a couple of Certifyd strops one is the 323 and the other is a 165A, I have a couple of others somewhere but they are so old you cant read the print.@ Jimmy, is ther a shaving AD that you dont have!:rofl2:

I've never shaved with a cartridge razor.:shrug: :D Yet.

I like a D-ring or clamp-style at the top to help keep the leather flat. The bottom with a plain D-ring type handle or just no handle at all. Don't really care for the leather handles sewn right into the leather.

I only have one strop. However, I picked this strop because it is 2 1/2" wide, it has a handle, it looks sturdy, has a canvas side and it is longer than I need. Perhaps I change my mind in the future as I become more experienced. I think that others have mentioned the same requirements for their strops.

None of my strops have handles so that is all I know and I'm fine with them that way. I don't have a preference between my 2 1/2 and the Wonder Hone of mine but it is hard to compare them because the Wonder Hone has almost no draw on the strop pictured. The second strop of the WH os also leather that was pasted or had a grit bonded to it. My next strop will be a Tony Miller 2 1/2 Latigo/Horse if I can ever find them in stock (hint: Tony, hold onto one for me w/ a set of D rings + drop me a PM when ready) Here are the strops I have now:

I've only just started using a Red Latigo from Tony Miller. I love the handle that attaches with D-rings. Besides looking great, the three-inch wide, flat ring makes it impossible for the strop to cup. However I might bend or warp the handle, the strop itself is safe.

I have used an expensive 2.5" DOVO with a nice padded handle and a long 3" Old Dog from Hand American. without a handle.

I prefer the long strop with no handle.

However, if the leather is short, the handle becomes essential.

The "arthuritis" in my left, hold the strop, hand is just in its infancy so I can grasp the non-handled ends of strops just fine. I even find myself holding handled strops above the handle, so the flat, square end works just fine for me. Although, for appearance the handle end of strops ala your LSA strop from Damon is my pick for utilitarian grace.

For the top, I prefer a clamp which has a ring or snap on it to catch a hook. For my shaving den I've made a board with several hooks on it that I screwed into the studs in my bathroom wall. This hanger holds several strops which I use in a rotation as stropping fickleness demands. SAD has definitely affected me; maybe even afflicted me. :rolleyes:

Cupping has never been an issue for me as I "buff" the chosen strop with my palm before use, which seems to flatten it just fine, and from time to time mold the strop convex with my hands before use.

Opinions abound, hmmm?

What Glen said, I like a handle for sure, I like brass fittings with a swivel that i can attach to a carabiner. I think it looks better IMHO. All those vintage strops are nice. Very nice indeed. Lately, I've been using Tony's strops and paddles and I've been happy. I also use a nice soft leather Solingen as a finisher.

I'd like a swivel clip to hang it from and no handle, just like my Tony Miller Originals strop, some fancy hardware had been nice, like the one on the Fine stars strop, but I don't have a problem with riveted leather either.

I prefer the ones without handle, that's what my father had and that's what I bought when I got my first strop. I also prefer the ones where I can remove the canvas and the leather easily, so I can wash them if need be.

I like the looks of D rings though.

I prefer the 3" TM strop without the metal hardware holding on the swivel clip. I would sometimes come very close to hitting the clip/s at the end of my stroke. That could of caused major damage to my blade if I did! Also the wider the better for me. Just feels more secure than the thinner strops. Thanks Lynn!:bow

I like my strop: Razor Strops, Hones, and Accessories

It has no metal thingies, which helps keep my razor ding free, and the strop is just fantastic. The leather and the linen is extremely nice and I think this strop can last for as long as I don't cut it in half :-)

I love how the american strops look, the metal, the insignias etc.. they look just perfect, but as I have to use it every day, I prefer the kind I have. I saw some of the wider strops at Bart's and I don't think those supersized strops are made for me. The one I linked has everything I want, except that I wouldn't mind it being even longer.

any idea as to what these numbers at the bottom of the strops mean?
