Hi all,
I just got (my first) paddle strop from Dovo. It has one side Balsa with red paste on it and the other side is leather with some felt underneith. I got it so I can strop when travelling, but I noticed that the leather side is not straight but curved. The sides of the leather are higher than in the midde, so if I put my razor on top only the sides touch the razor and the blade not the middle..Is this normal? should I do something about it?:confused:

That doesn't sound correct. See if you can send it back for a refund. If you want a paddle you'll love, get Tony Miller's super wide padde. I'm sorry, you said for traveling. He does have a travel paddle box with storage...I may get one myself. I have his hanging strops and a few of his wide paddles...Rich

Here is an update on what happened: I contacted the store and they told me to send it back and they will also refund my expenses! Really great costumer service!:y
Congrats, man! Nice to hear good customer relations. You might also want to contact Tony Miller. I bought one of his paddle strops. The thing was so beautiful I didn't want to use it! :tu
I just got a reply from the store about this strop and I got the following answer:
[...]we have examined all the wooden handled strops and find that they are all slightly indented in the centre. Dovo say this is quite normal and if the strop is lubricated with yellow paste it will soften and flatten.
Could this be right? :shrug:
It may be true, but I am a little sceptical about it to be honest. I can see how an un-flat hanging strop would flatten after it has been worked in, but a paddle strop? I can't imagine a piece of leather that has been glued down to a piece of wood flattening out, no matter how worked in the leather is. I have no experience with this, just my intuition, so take it for what it's worth!

Ok, maybe I should have mentioned the leather is not directly on the wood, it is on some soft material i think it is felt. so it is leather - felt - wood. So i dont know..
This all looks unusable to me, even after the explanations. Purchase something from the Tony Miller collection, everyone raves about the quality. Or get yourself some scrap leather and glue it onto a board that you have flattened. This option is very inexpensive and gives you huge flexibility in sizes, draws, etc, all based on what you can scrounge up locally. Also, look at the ChrisL post for the worlds cheapest 30,000 hone. Could be done with other types of wood, I would imagine. I’ll be giving it a try.

Ok thanks..I'm bot very interested in using pastes I only want it to use as a regular strop but just something more handy than the hanging strop. But thanks anyway..
I'll see if I can get a refund from the store.
Here's a follow up on the previous subject..they agreed to a refund without any kind of arguing needed! Really great service, kind and friendly, costumer happiness always comes no 1:tu
