Anyone out there with a 3" strop have any problems with cupping? I am in a tug of war with getting either a 2" Latigo or a 3" Latigo.
Just wondering if anyone has had problems or worries about problems in the future....
Bare in mind i will not be buying a cheap strop it will be from a reputable seller but am still wondering if a few years down the road I would be having trouble with a 3" cupping on me?
I have one from Tony Miller, Hand American and Straight Razor Designs and no problems with mine.
If you care for it properly, you shouldn't have trouble with either width of strop.
The first strop I purchased was a Dovo Extra Wide 3" "Russian style" from Classic Shaving. It's a fairly thin strop with a velvety surface. I found it difficult to avoid some concave cupping with that strop. I prefer a 2.5" wide strop for that reason. I'm sure there are plenty of great performers out there in the 3" variety and overall I found the Dovo to be a good strop with a good surface.

From what I hear, as long as you use the strop regularly, a good quality 3" strop will not cup. I personally got a 2", but that was a financial thing :p

Another way I rationalized my decision was that I thought it would be a good idea to be forced into really developing the x-pattern skills. Also some people have told me before that smiling razors strop better on thinner strops, not just hones, but others have also said it doesn't matter because the leather gives enough to accommodate the smile anyways.Quote:

I say get the 3", that way you can do the X pattern if you want, but you aren't forced to like with a 2" strop.
Do the various attachment methods effect whether or not a strop will cup?

With handles that are attached via D-rings or just plain D-rings, the strop should stay nice and flat no matter how wide. I have a TM buffed horsehide, and an Illinois 827. The 827 has handles sewn right to the leather and unless I hold it properly (pinched handle or folding the handle over my fingers to keep it flat) the strop will cup while I am stropping.
As far as width, that is personal preference territory; however, it does give you the option to x-pattern long and slight or tight and pronounced. It's always good to have options.
I would say the harder thing to figure out is what kind of leather you are going with...

My TM 3" latigo I got around 1/2007 it still looks almost like new, except a minor nick or so that is my fault totally, but no cupping at all. I store mine hanging on the back of a closet door in a dry room not in the humid bathroom though.
