My strop, which was purchased used, did the same thing until I conditioned it. Neatsfoot oil and yellow dovo strop paste seem to be the two more popular strop treatments, but I'm starting to suspect that virtually anything you would use to condition leather would work just fine. In fact, I used a product called sno-seal which is mostly beeswax on my strop, and it's doing fantastically well. Of course, my stropping technique has also been improving, so it's hard to say how uch is because of the conditioning, and how much is because of my increasing skill

Boy, threads like this were a lifesaver for me as a newb to straights. I would have never known if my techniques were good bad or indifferent without the feedback of experienced shavers. Awesome replies folks! It's great that newbs don't get treated like ignorant fools. We were all there once.
