My home-made strop!

I've just made my strop, using some leather I had left over from some other projects.

Dimensions: Width - about 2 & 3/4 inches (7cm)
Length (stroppable length) - just under 16 inches (39.5cm)
Thickness - about 4mm (not sure about inches)

It's all leather except for the cotton tie at the end. Although it isn't flat, it seems to flatten out fine when I pull it taut for stropping.

Feels alright stropping with a butter knife - I'll get to try it with my razor when it comes back from sharpening on Thursday.

Close up you'd see there are marks on the leather and the edges look a bit uneven (I cut it with a knife), but this doesn't seem to affect the stropping (with a butter knife anyway). Anyway - I'm happy with it :).

*Couple of pictures a bit blurred - the stitching on the handle is actually single line in box with one diagonal (... the pic makes it look like a messy double line).

BTW I'm new to STR8s so this is also my first strop - I'll be attempting my 2nd shave on Friday.

this would interest me as well. strop making
in fact. DIY interests me altogether
but first i need to try my hand at other things. after all i have only had my 3rd shave only a couple days ago.

I think it's all cow leather - the main body of the strop is surplus from a baldric I made at a workshop years ago - so someone else got that. You could probably look up a leather supplier - sometimes when you go in, you'll meet people who've worked with leather a lot and who can advise you.

DIY does feel satisfying (especially when it works!)

The strap handle feels nice - of course, I'll see how it goes with everyday use. There's room in the handle to hold it in a few different ways, so I'll probably work out what suits me best.

Looks good. Congrats on the stitching. I can't sew to save my life :)

From memory, in the first series of Black Adder, BlackAdder / Edmund says the following line "Here baldric hold my sword" - so that's how he got his name. (Before that I think he was "Ploppy" like his father)
