Making a strop - Guidence requested

Hi everyone,

My family has a leather hat and belt business, so I've got the tools and materials available to me to make a strop.

Just had a few questions regarding it.

- Is it okay to use chrome-tanned leather?
- The leather I'm thinking of using is a shoulder skin off a cow, is there a limit on the thickness of a hanging strop, as this is leather we use for belts?
- I've noticed alot of strops are not very wide, is there a particular reason for this? Do people think a wider strop would be better
- & finally, what length should i make it?

Sorry if all these are beginner questions, but...well I AM a beginner :)

Belt thickness should be fine. A wider strop (3 inches) is fine. I think the max stropping length you want is 17 inches, not counting what you put on for your grips and such. Longer then that and it sags.

Cant say about chrome or the reason. Think I read they were narrower in the past b/c of cost.

okay, i have some roo leather offcuts here at work.
I think I may make a strop out of some when I get the chance
