Hello Folks,
I found a very cheap and high quality (of German origin) Cr2O3 powder. It is 3 Euros for 100 gr.They say the particle size of 0.3 microns

Just one question - have you tried it yourself on your razors?
This stuff is marketed as a pigment. How about grit size and impurities? You need to know those before pasting it onto your strop!

Iron oxides cut faster than CrOx. The particle size of 0.22 um would be ok.
Predominant particle size is 0.3 mcm, but what's the range and maximum? Say 1% of particles is 1.0 mcm I am not sure this chromium oxide would be useful.

I am from Germany and this is exactly the pigment which is used in the Acryl and Oil Paint we Germans uses for our strops. So it will works perfectly.

I have not tried this myself. But, the datasheet says 99% purity, I think as Germans say besser geht est nicht
I ordered some of the Kremer Chromium Oxide mentioned above. Have not used it yet, and can't comment on performance. Ordering information from a US outlet...

What I use is similar: chromium oxide green pigment P17 by Schmincke

Schmincke are known for making artist's pigments of particularly uniform and fine particle size. More experienced members whom I send some of it confirmed the quality. On one of the German SR fora it was discussed favourably too, I think, as was indeed the Kremer pigment.
Whichever the supplier, make sure you buy stumpf/matt/dull chromium oxide (P17/PG17); the feurig/sharp/emerald/viridian (P18/PG18) variety is useless for our goals (and more expensive too).
I sent an inquiry about particle size to Kremer, and just got back a reply, which I will add below. They say "predominant size is 0.3 microns", and I gather it is very pure, meaning not many particles of other sizes. Attaching their spec sheet.
I'm going to paint some balsa, and start using it in order to compare to the CrO paste I'm using now from Straight Razor Designs.

Will test, and will reply here. I have asked for more specific information about the % of larger particles, and will respond here also if I get more information.
I use the Kremer all the time and it does the trick beautifully.

Olivia, have you used other Chromium Oxide sources other than Kremer? If so, how would you compare?

I buy their pigments for years, so I had no demand.
Those pigments work beautifully, they are excellent.
There Cr2O3 is excellent for finishing razors.
There is however another very interesting pigment I would like you to try,
if you decide to buy from kremer.
It is
PR 110 M hell
That is red iron oxide (Fe2O3) with a given particle size of 0.09ĩm
I tried it and I love it. Extremeley fine, a little finer than their chroimium oxide.
Defenetly nothing you need, but makes for the smoothest and sharpest shaves.
I love Kremer (and itīs so cheap...)
Red iron oxide is used in "jewelers rouge" polish I believe. No reason why it wouldn't work too as a very very fine finishing polish/abrasive for a razor too. You can buy it at any hardware store.Quote:

I ordered some 0.25 micron diamond spray from SRDesigns, and it should arrive any day. I will try it as my final polish. But, the one complaint I hear about using diamond as the final polish is that it leaves a more gouged, harsh bevel and edge. Sharp! But, not as smooth as with CrOxide.
I think I will experiment with the diamond spray.

That Iron Oxide Red 110 M light almost sounds too good to be true. Anyone know how big the SiO2 + Al2O3 particles are that make up 4% of the pigment and if they would cause any problems?
I don't know about the particle size of the other fillers other than the iron oxide. But, I am very satisfied with the 110 product iron oxide from Kremer. The same goes for the 0.3 micron Chromium Oxide from Kremer.
I contacted a representative from Kremer with the same question about the 0.3 micron CrO. It took them a week to contact the technical staff in Germany and get an answer. Basically, they said that the QA on the product was extremely stringent. And, that they couldn't guarantee that bigger particles didn't exist. But, if so, they would be a very very small percentage.
I would suspect the same applies to other Kremer products. Anyone I have heard talk about Kremer, and most seem to be European, speak very highly of their products.
Kremer is a serious/good company in terms of pigment supply for artists. When I lived in NYC my brother would have me go to their 29th street store to buy him pigments he needed. They were pretty serious- many toxic pigment jars lining the walls. Customers were not allowed to touch anything. Once, a couple was browsing the pigments and kept reaching for them. The store clerk got angry and kept warning them not to touch anything but the people didn't listen. Eventually they got kicked out of the store in a pretty violent manner. It was great. Wish I had thought about all this when I lived down there.
I've used Kremer pigments for my soaps from the get go.
They always delivered a consistent quality, correct stuff and in a very friendly manner.
It is the very same stuff that you get when you order cosmetic or pharmacy ingredients and the analysis has shown the very best results. (Had to get those done because of regulations)
For what they market it (Artist supply) its above standard.
I canīt add much to what Olivia said, only that I have used the Pr 110 for several months now, on many many razors.
It delivered very smooth results, nothing like harsh or agressive,
itīs very smooth polishing without leaving any scratches (from irregularities or such) at all. Remember not to apply much to the leather and to be extremely careful, and avoid breathing in the particles
I'm sorry for reviving such an old thread but while looking for CrOx in Bulgaria I found a distributor of Kremer. I've read all posts here and they are all positive. The only thing that worries me is that CrOx is usually 0.5 micron while the Kremer one is 0.3 micron. I'm going to be using it for refreshing my straight but later on when I get my lapping film also for honing after the 1 micron lapping film. Is it suitable for this or should I get a 0.5 micron one? Thanks!
See my reply above about Kremer 0.3 micron chromium oxide powder. I have personally used the 0.3 micron chromium oxide from Kremer for about four years.

I have personally used their 0.1 micron (actually, 0.09) micron iron oxide for the same length of time - 4 years. I use 0.3 micron on balsa, wipe the blade, then strop on 0.1 micron iron oxide on the other side of the piece of balsa, wipe blade and strop on leather.Quote:

The Kremer Crox is good stuf i use it and it gives good results.
