repasting

Hi all,

Ive got an old vintage horsehide strop,
very good condition, altho quite dry.
I've got some dovo yellow paste tubes lying around so I'm giving that a go right now.
I just pasted the strop with a very light coating of the yellow paste, now my question is, how long would I need to wait to repaste the strop with another coating?
And does it matter if I let the strop lie down on a table or hang it up?

you confused me.Are you pasted leather side of the strop?
if you paste ones it will last at least 6 months. GL

Put the paste on and rub it in with your thumbs- like kind of massage, you should do it only when the strop is dry and is losing it's flexibility, definitly the strop should hang down.

woops I made a typo, it's edited now

I had an old very stiff and dried out strop,
I was thinking one coating wasn't enough, but now after waiting a while, it seems more supple already, so I figured I should apply more coats after a while, but I guess I should just wait and see how it improves and when the oil seems all gone and absorbed I'll see if it needs another coat.

Once you get the paste rubbed into the strop, take a soft rag and wipe off as much as you can. The idea of using paste is to fill the pores with the product and not the surface.
Your stropping will press the surface just enough to present the paste to the blades edge. Remember that some of the pastes are very agressive so be cautious on how you use it.

Don't worry about the Dovo yellow being abrasive it's only a leather conditioner.
Neatsfot oil is another alternative for softening leather.

Yeah, you're just conditioning the leather with the yellow, not that thats a bad thing.

Is that what you were asking, or are you planning to put an abrasive paste on the strop, also? If you're just conditioning it then you can add as much yellow paste or oil as you want, within reason. It would prolly be best to give it 12-24 hours between coats to see the full results. If you're planning to add an abrasive paste I'd say to get the strop conditioned as you want it, then add the other paste.

I'm just conditioning, I'm not planning to put any abrasive paste on it at all.
I'll check the strop again after I let the paste sink in for 12 to 24 hrs and we'll see from there.
