below is a photo my the backside of my strop. it has tiny little pieces of leather sticking out like hair, in a way. this side does feel much rougher than the other side of the strop but i was wondering if this is safe to use.

This side will give your straight more of a workout then you would expect. The finished side strops evenly though the whole motion, thus keeping the razor evenly finished.

Some strops are actually made with a rough texture. Hand American made a two piece strop with one piece rough and the other smooth. For a short while Tony Miller experimented with a textured leather. I've heard of guys pasting the back (rough) side as well though I haven't done it myself. If you have a few razors try it with one of them and see what your results are and report back.
I'd like to know if that works for you. The back of my strop looks like that, and I've been wondering if it would be a good substitute for a cloth component.
This looks like the back of the famous RupRazor Filly Strop, which Ken Rup pastes with CrOx.
Reminds me of the Illinois 827.
