Hello, I have a question about the proper way to hold a razor while stropping. Do you keep the same grip for both strokes, forwards and backwards? In the Barbers manual it says thumb on top of shank and forefinger on bottom for even pressure for both strokes . But on the video's it looks like they have their thumb for the forward stroke on the side of the shank where the jimps are, and then thumb on the top for the backward stroke. Which is the corect method?
I initially wondered the same thing. While I have very little experience, I will share the method I adopted and logic for same.
I do not think there is a correct or incorrect way to hold the razor when stopping, only an incorrect outcome. You will probably find many different grips being used.
Having said that, I believe the instructions in the barbers manual to place the thumb on top of the shank and the forefinger on the bottom for EVEN PRESSURE in both directions is the best starting point, and the one I adopted. This grip has several things going for it, at least for me.
1 - It forces you to slow down as it not a natural motion.
2 - It prevents rolling the wrist. This is the natural tendency if the grip is not changed, and is conducive to unequal pressure in the fore and aft strokes.
YMMV, and each person is different. Those with very large or small hands may have to experiment what works for them.
