What can I use on an old strop?

I found an old strop in a box that used to be my Grandfather's. It is pretty dry and hard but there are no cuts or gouges in the leather. The only thing I know about it is that it is pig skin. I don't know how old it is, or when it was last used (I never saw him use a straight razor). I'm just wondering if there is anything I can put on the strop to soften it up and make it suitable for stropping. I thought about Neatsfoot oil But I wanted to get some opinions first. Also would I treat both side or just the smooth leather side. There is no linen, just leather. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Neatsfoot oil will work. Also, ClassicShaving.com has some good strop dressing.

The neatsfoot oil will work and be sure to do both sides.
But.don't overdo it. Use the first coat as a cleaner. Just put some on, work it around and wipe it off. Let it dry for 24 hours.
Then you can apply another 4 drops and work it in. let it dry for 24 hrs. Repeat if necessary.

I've used both Fiebing's Mink Oil Liquid and Lexol with good results on various leather items. The MOL lists ingredients: Mink Oil, Silicone, Lanolin, and Pure Neatsfoot Oil. The Lexol seems like a cross between liquid saddle soap and Armorall on steroids.

Try unscented Goop. I learned about this on the Hand American web site. It has lanolin in it to condition the leather and it makes a dandy cleaner also. I've cleaned and conditioned my old pasted strops with it.
