Pastes on hanging strops
As the title of this thread suggests: as a newbie, I was just considering that pastes generally seem to be applied to a paddle strop. Is there any reason (other than perhaps economy and convenience) for this, or is applying paste to a hanging strop perfectly reasonable? There seems no reason why the performance wouldn't be the same.

Jimmy, Some guy with lots of experience use pastes on hanging strops but for the common man it is not a great idea. the flexible strop combined with pastes makes it very easy to round the razors edge making it more dull instead of sharper. Economy would be a second reason, lots of surface area on a hanging strop.
A hard surafe paddle is a better choice as there is no give and therefore no rounded edge.

I use pastes on a hanging strop for my knives. Great edge and a very fast touch-up as well.

Is there a practical reason for doing it on razor strops?
