I saw a 2-sided paddle strop that was really a strip leather stretched over a metal frame. Would that be more effective than the regular paddle? What are the benefits of having one of those?

That is called a loom strop, and it is very nice design. Basically a stretched hanging strop, so no need for stretching...

Thanks. I guess this is an on-going learning process.
Lynn shows off a couple in his video. He also sells maestro versions, or you can get a different version (streich-reiman I think) from Crowley.
No $$$ for the video right now. So what are the benefits over a regular paddle if used with pastes?
I've got a vintage one as well as a new one. They are nice other than having a small surface area on most of them. Mine is 1 1/4" x 8". They need to have the tension released when not being used as the leather will often bow if left taught.
I would think the Maestro's version are better engineered than the inexpensive ones and are likely a lot wider too.
I also have a version built around a wooden center piece so one has the stretched leather on two sides and hard, pasted wood on the other two. Kind of the best of both worlds provided it does not bow.

This is a very nice design. It has the advantage that you can set the tension on the paddle. That way, you can adjust it to have exactly the feel of you hanging strop, or whatever feel you want.Quote:

I can get the Jemico models if anyone is interested at around the cost of my 4 sided paddles.

This was just curiosity... My next two strops will come from the same source as my first one. I wonder who it is :w
Mine is about the size of the Jemico 4-sided.Quote:

I find green paste a little too fine for refreshing, but the Jemico paddle with the stone and leather strop is perfect, making it the ideal travel paddle.
Joe,
The Jemico 4 sides are nice. Sadly though they are expensive. My dealer cost on one is higher than my retail on my own 4 sided paddle (less pastes) making full retail nearly double mine.
I do like them though.

Hey you can't beat a Tony Miller paddle. Save the money for razors and stick with Tony's paddles. :tu
Razors, more razors.......must buy more razors............. <g>
Tony
NO! Don't say that anymore! My credit card is maxed out!Quote:

i got a 3 inch strop from tony and it is beautiful, so much so that Im a little afraid to use it...lol, Think Ive only used it a half dozen times, but i also own a 4 sided paddle which is definately the 'dogs balls' which stays hung in my wardrobe. When I travel offshore I carry 4 razors, my coticule or thuringan Hone , rubbing stone and a steich- reimen 2 sided with plain and 0.50 paste....now I know that sounds like alot but being honest its the only real time I have with no interuption to fart around with my blades and take as long as I like to shave, which is really nice.
I would love to try the other strops and hopefully i will once we move to the US of A but for now my cash is really pretty much tied up...so razors.....i must not bid...i must not bid.....i must not bid.....:w
Hey Randy ...who you trying to convince?:roflmao ...lol
all the best guys, simon:tu
