Kees, are you the same kees as woodcentral kees? Somehow I think I've asked you that before, but I don't remember the answer.
Seems there is quite a bit of info on the topic. http://straightrazorpalace.com/strop...g-article.html
I definately agree that it can be felt, but I have not ever physically seen a qualitative improvement (as I assume that's what you meant). I've also measured it after honing with an improvement in the HHT, but again that is debatable and most certainly not generally accepted as a valid measuring device. And that's also not the point of why I use it.
I am really genuinely interested in how you have seen and measured the qualitative improvement of an edge after stropping, because I know it does but can't for the life of me tell why and I find that a little frustrating (to a very minor extent of course).
I would say that there is a reason why that using leather last has been the gold standard for finishing a shave ready edge.
I have shaved off of my wool felt and linen strops before and while the shave was close it was also much harsher then off of leather.
So I would say that by finishing on leather we are probably losing a small amount of sharpness but we are gaining a more polished/ smooth edge. I feel I would rather have the smooth edge.
It's a very simple thing to test for yourself just reveres your normal stropping routine. You will not damage your edge by doing this.
