New Tony Miller Strop

I received the strop I ordered from Tony yesterday.

What a beauty! It's the #1 3" with the black Latigo leather on one side and the Honey Brown on the other. It's beefy. It's chunky. You could hypnotize a Harley Davidson rider with it by merely swinging it back and forth a few times in front of them! But most of all it's a work of art.

And the attention to detail. Just look at the rivets in the 2nd pic. They are all lined up. To some, that might imply anal retentiveness, but to me, that screams "I care about my work!"

Tony also threw in a starter strop (which is a beautiful piece as well) and a bottle of leather conditioner.

Thanks, Tony! Getting that strop yesterday totally made my day and I can't wait to use it!

Thank you! Glad you are pleased. yes, the screw heads all line up. Just like in gunsmithing where you should do the same thing, it is a sign of attention paid to details.

I finally got to use it this morning! It must be what it's like to go from driving a Honda Civic to Rolls Royce.

The heavy black leather a nice grab to its draw and the honey brown side feels silky smooth. I stropped on the black leather side about 20 times and finished on the brown side about 10 right before shaving.

I actually have to move my strop hook up about 2 inches since Tony's strop is a big one. I bet he impresses the ladies with the sizes of his strops. Haha!!

Congratulation spacetoast, for sure you got a beautiful strop, I am presently shopping for a strop myself and I don’t want to make any mistake. Most of the strops are made of linen and leather, this one does not have any linen but two different type of leather and I am wondering what the best setup is. Do we realy need to have the linen or is it better to have two different leathers, according to Tony both leather will do the same job. If I want to purchase the Cadillac of the strop witch one should I go for?

I'm sure Tony can also do 2 leathers and linen. That way you can go past that Caddy and get yourself a nice BMW instead :D

I've got other strops with linen. I got the one from Tony with two leathers mainly because I thought it would be nice to have a big, chunky strop. I'm not sure you really need linen, I guess that's just a personal preference. Some say the linen is to heat the blade edge before stropping, but I usually just run the blade under hot water.

Honestly, I don't think you could go wrong buying any of Tony's strops. They all look so nice. Even the starter strop he included is a beauty.

I would say if you use linen now, then get one with leather and linen, but if you just want to splurge (like I did) get one with the nicest leathers he has. :nj

I bought a Heirloom #1 BEST 2 1/2" Vintage Honey Brown Hanging Strop from Tony about a month ago and he included the starter strop too. These are works of art. I stopped using the Dovo strop I had after getting these. They do force me to strop nice and slowly because I will cry like a baby if I nick it... :cry:

Okay, now I'm even more confused. What's the difference between black latigo and red? :thinking: Is the dual leather a custom order or is it listed on Tony's site and I somehow missed it? I'm curious about cost and if I can "Santa" one of these to myself.

I dont know about the difference between Black and Red Latigo (other than the colour difference, of course!), but the dual leather is an add-on, listed on Tony's site. Depending on what you have, it adds about $10 to the cost.

Wow, for ten bucks that's a mighty fine upgrade! I've got a few more Christmas gifts to pay for but, umm ... anybody want to buy a kidney? :D
I need to get with Tony and decide whether to go with red or black latigo with the honey combo strop. I need some paste for a paddle strop I scored yesterday anyway so might as well bite the bullet and get it all at once.

My current supply of black latigo has slightly more draw than the red and a bit more texture to the surface, not exactly glass smooth like the red tends to be. Neither are a shiney finish but the black is not as smooth as the red.

Some new hides arrived late yesterday from a different Latigo that may be very promising (or a rather large load will be headed back to the tannery <g>).

Just placed my order through Tony's website. Decided to go with the #1 Best in 2.5" red latigo/honey brown. :y

This is on top of buying a Dovo w/paddle starter kit from "Flounder" about two hours ago (WITH Lynn's DVD!) - he's giving up on straights and I couldn't pass up the deal ... By this time next week I should be shaving with full, top quality equipment!

Did I mention how glad I am I found this place?! You guys rock!

It is a nice strop, I will probably get the same one than Spacetoast, I don’t see how I can go wrong with this one, the idea of the two leather with the linen is good but I have heard that the linen does not really make any difference, in fact some expert are saying that it was really never proven that it is improving the condition of the edge, in fact the only thing they are sure is that it does not damage the edge, any comments???

has soft black leather on one strop and tan harder leather on the other
i thought i was getting a leather and linen combo
my question is this, what are each strops used for. and should i have a linen strop or does one of these strops take its place.

In my humble opinion you certainly don't need linen. My strop has never had it and I wouldn't order one with it. However you should call Tony Miller he is very helpful and can tell you more about his products than anyone..

Was this a strop from me? I think I have only done one of two like this so maybe you mean another type from another maker perhaps?

My standard strops are all leather and linen and one would have to select all leathers from my website to get anything different.

Either way, if it is a Latigo or similar it would have lots of draw and would be the one to use first. The smoother, harder leather would be for finishing and used after the more textured side.

Attention to details, I hear this everyday in the military. It always shows when someone does take pride and attention to detail as you can see in those pics.

I want to buy Tony's top of the line strop one day. Maybe after I get to my duty station. Hopefully I can use a SR there. God I hope so....

i bought the strop from as a set from another seller
not sure what the cloth/(leather or vinyl ) is
the acutal hard leather side is ok
im going to try to make a paddle strop
if it is not sutable ill be getting one from you.
where would i pick up the balsa and what grade or thickness is best
i appreciate your imput,
the senior members in the forums are very helpfull, this sight is addiciting.

Thought I'd bump this thread back to the top rather than start a new one since they really are related:

I just had a knock at the door, the mailman dropped off my new strop from Tony Miller. It's similar to the one Spacetoast has but I opted for the 2.5" width and red latigo instead of the black. Also include in the package was the "practice strop" I'd requested - it's a dandy in it's own right and he includes them gratis on request, I'm not even sure how to describe that level of customer service.

Tony, the strop's a true beauty and I'll use it with pride. Seems I'm starting out with the best equipment from the word "GO!" Only problem I see with this approach is I'm likely to spoiled by all the quality gear. :D
