We all strop on fabric before leather, but I've never been clear on why this is necessary. Even if the fabric is more abrasive, is it actually removing steel? Whatever the fabric does would the leather eventually do anyway? Have any of you guys done an informal experiment, comparing an edge stropped on fabric and leather with one stropped on leather only? Did the old time barbers with a strop attached to the chair use a fabric component?

You can skip and strop on leather only, but eventually the strop will load with metal particles.
There are different theories. I believe that the linen does remove a significant amount of metal and therefore acts like a very mild hone. My canvas strop gets grey over time and gets cleaned occasionally. I don't strop on canvas every time, only when my razor loses some of it's ability to instantly grab ands cut my whiskers. That happens about every two or three weeks; I usually shave six days a week. I don't have a moustache or beard. I have never honed my razor on a stone in the almost two and a half years since I bought it new and cracked the Dovo factory seal on it's box.The barbers I went to in the 1960s through 1980s had a linen and leather strop hanging from each of their chairs.
How do you clean a cotton strop? I sometimes go from linen with chromium oxide to my cotton strop and I think over time a little bit of the chromium oxide has come off onto the cotton. I don't think its enough to hurt anything and I can't really see green on it,its just a little bit discolored. May even just be metal particles from the blade itself. I have since started wiping my blade before I move from the chromium oxide strop to the cotton strop.
The linen fabric strop is to clean the razor of skin, blood, soap and oxidation (rust), so you will not imbed all that junk into you leather strop. Once imbedded into the leather pores it will never all come out, which is why we see random, large deep stria on magnified photos of bevels.
Look at your razor under magnification, before you strop it. All that “stuff” can affect you final edge if you are stropping on it. Linen stropping may cause some edge re-alignment and polishing, but mostly it is for cleaning.
Linen and cloth strops can be washed with soap and water and while all contaminants may never be removed, small amounts of contaminates will not grossly affect performance. But if one seeks the best, finest edge quality… it is some to be considered.
To clean my canvas strop, I rub a little lather on it then wipe it with a clean, damp rag. Comes out nice and white. It's an Illinois #361 strop and the canvas is heavily coated with sizing or something similar; it doesn't seem to retain much grime after the cleaning.
Don't you have to worry that you are adding the paste to your linnen now? Thought you were suppose to wipe the blade then go to linnen and then leather?Quote:

Many linen strops were pasted to begin with though not with Chrome Ox. I would clean your blade in the future to keep contamination to a minimum. The most intrusive contaminate to hanging strops is air borne dust.
Because it sounds cool and drives the wife bonkers when she hears it :p
I'm sure many of the old time barbers did. The strops came with the leather and the linen. I remember seeing at least one or two of my barbers, over the years, use both but I am sure it depended on whether it was a quick refresh or serious stropping.Quote:

So this is not a new debate. I have found that stropping on linen before leather seems to make a very positive difference in my edges. We all have to try it both ways to see for ourselves.

All of the other methods will work, I've used most of them. Recently, I took my Vintage DD Cordovan apart, and cleaned the cotton strop with spray carpet cleaner and a small scrub brush. Not only did come out nice and white, it softened it up quite a bit.Quote:

I remeber when i first started work at my currant barber shop there was a strop and a belgium coticule in a wrag. the strop was 50 years old and it had linen fabric on it...jim the barber told me it brought the edge up before the leather ...i found linen to be very efective andas said above the more broken in it gets the better it works...... I also spoke to an old barber on news years eve, he said they used a stone and a strip of balsa with browny red paste , so it seems balsa was being used 50 years ago as we do now.....

I definitely notice a difference when using linen, especially after honing. The razor is sharper, probably because all that junk (swarf, honing debris) has been removed & is not getting embedded in the leather or standing in the way of the true edge.
I look upon stropping on canvas as cleaning the edge, I consider stropping on leather to be polishing the edge. I'm probably wrong.
Actually, I'd also like to say that I used to 'like' the heating up the edge idea, but have since moved away from it. To me it just doesn't seem logical. leaving my razor on the windowsill at the moment would save 30 laps on canvas in the morning; or else I could do without stropping on canvas altogether in summer...Quote:

If you look at the SEM pictures on the "Science of Sharp" blog, you'll see that stropping on linen and stropping on leather can indeed do different things to the metal, especially when there is a foil edge or a rolled edge present. Specifically, the What does Stropping do? post tells a story with pictures.
Whoa, this is a necro post that has risen from the dead. The SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) pics on the link above while not quite as interesting as images of an unseen bug that lives in your armpit, are fascinating in themselves. The pics make me want to see some SEM pics of before and after beard/skin done by a straight razor. Somehow I think that the legendary BBS shave might in fact look like a hellish forest of stumps and holes.
I saw these pictures before, very interesting to look at the details of sharpening. You begin to understand more the process.
After two years of shaving with two razors about 3x a week, I just bought a canvas/leather strop at a place in West Edmonton Mall. I was thinking that both needed to be rehoned but the canvas restored both edges phenomenally. The both went from grabbing to oh so smooth. Both are antiques turn of the century razors.
I had a similar revelation to Theiggy above. To me, it seems that the canvas is absolutely necessary to get the best edge.
