The shiny side has cupped already, actually. That's part of the reason I just abandoned using it early on. If I keep to the end of the strop, I can still use it. I'm in the market for a paddle-style strop currently.

Take a look at Star Shaving. I picked up a paddle strop from star and it's been great. I also saw three on eBay for a great price

I made a strop, and for stiffeners I used door hinges, close the hinge over the end of the strop, mark where the holes are ( you need hinges with the fixing holes that line up when the hinge is closed), drill or punch the leather, rivet hinges to strop. I attached a loop to tge centre rivet at the top for a cord hanger, and a piece of scrap leather to the bottom hinge for a handle.
You should be able to uncup it by rubbing it with your hand, just create the opposite curve, and rub.
