Comparison of the various leathers sold by SRD

My favorite is the P4. It's like butter. I found the P1 to be too slick and hard. The latigo was nice, but the draw was heavier than I wanted. The P3 does have kind of a heavy draw, but not as much as the latigo. I kept the P3 and P4, my favorite two.

That makes P1 sound good to me.

Does/has anyone used the P2? Not one single reference to that one yet (outside of review).

Hello, any Premium 2 strop users anywhere?!

Anybody have a 3" SRD stop leather they don't like and would sell/trade? PM me. I'm too strung out on razors and rocks to buy all the leathers to see which one works best for me.

I had an SRD Latigo and it has a heavy draw. I also had a P3 (Buffalo) and it has an even heavier draw than the Latigo. My preferences in strops have changed and now I like a light draw, so I use horsehide and Tony Miller's premium steerhide. SRP discontinued their horsehide, but I would definitely get one if they bring it back.

I picked up another used strop (practically a gimme) says it's "'A-1' Extra Heavy Shell, Saddle Leather" and it cleaned up nice, feels good. So now i have two "hard and fast" strops (Russian shell is the other). I just use the nylon side of the SRD at this point. Some day I'll run across someone with an extra slab of leather to try in the SRD hardware (yes each leather is available individually so that one can swap them out, will do when my income picks up). Otherwise I'm pretty well done with that market personally.

I love these strop threads.I think the key to a great strop is in the quality of construction.
The diff type of leathers used may all feel a bit diff,But in the end they all do the same thing,they strop your Razor.
Your Razor has no clue as to what type of leather is used and really do's not care.:) JMO

Totally agree. What it comes down to is, personal preference, What you like, and feel comfortable with. When I started, I was using Latigo. I quickly got tired of the heavy draw. Today I prefer Horsehide, very slick, and fast. SRD's premium 1 remains one of my favs.

Exactly. I have five pre-owned strops and one SRD that was new for me. All but one of my pre-owned are antiques, so i didn't think trying to compare them to SRD would make sense given their varied histories and conditions. The other is a modern production ILL 827 and I don't care for it. I pasted it, as I pasted my "Barber's Special". And the latigo isn't too bad on the tiny 4/8 blade i have, or even the super double extreme maxi hollow 5/8 blades.

I was just hoping to find the SRD leather that feels like the shell from back in the day and my only cross-over for comparison is the latigo.
