Anybody had experience with this place? Leather Hanging Strops
We used to see many posts about star shaving quite some time ago but don't lately. I don't know if they have changed or not but based on the previous posts I would urge caution and investigate the old threads.
Yeah if its the same place I am thinking about (the sites been spruced up a bit - though his pictures still suck lol), the guy has been around for a while.
From everything I have heard (never bought myself), its like buying a Lada. It'll get you where you want to go, but you might walk a bit being you're always parking down the way lol.
I like my 3" "Big Daddy" strop....

The strops are very good quality. I have yet to hear anything bad about the leather on the forums. The only issues I have heard have been about communication or shipping. I have the big Daddy and it has been a wonderful strop for the past three years.
You can buy a pce of very High grade strop leather for $6.00,the rest of the hardware, maybe 8 bux max,do the math.
I have a Big Daddy as well. It's a great first strop and a great value. I have since upgraded to a Walking-Horse horsebutt strop. I still use the Big Daddy to apply chromium oxide to my razors.
There have been a few threads about bad communication and things like that. As far as I know he is a one man show and had some bumpy health issues a while back. I have dealt with him a couple of times and had no issues. The strops are ok, and replacement leather is inexpensive.
I bought one. True it took awhile,,,24days from purchase till receipt of my 3 inch English Bridle strop. Said that the internet was out. That being said, The product is a solid stand up piece of work.Yes it is my first real strop. So I have learned on Star leather. Maybe one day I will upgrade, but if it aint broke why fix it?
I have beat it,nicked it,had to sand it,and it holds up.
I have one as well and I still use it. It doesn't have all the frills of the more high end ones, but it does what it is supposed to do. I changed out the wool felt for a vintage linen strop. I still use the wool felt for cleaning the edge after honing and some diamond spray on the other side. The leather is on the thicker side compared to a lot of others.
yeh I have the English Bridle "Big Daddy" it is the first & only strop I have & it works fine, you do need to break them in a bit first, but they do come with some instructions "now" on this with your strop whern you get it, it does go into the detailes on the site also somewhere.
if you search some previous threads for Big Daddy strop you should find the details pretty sure it was late last year.
Found the post here you go hope it helps
when I got mine I found it was as stiff but the following is recommended by Star shaving,
[Quote]
For Best Results use water and soap on the leather, such as your shave brush with shave soap. Also use the palm of your hand to rub the leather strop occasionally to help keep the leather pliable. When the leather is not pliable use Neatsfoot oil and when the leather is dirty use Saddle soap. Use a lint roller to keep the Felt strop clean. We have replacement leather or felt for the strop if you ever need to replace the leather or felt part of the strop for any reason such as cuts put into leather or felt strop from stropping. That is why we use Chicago screws in making the strop so that the strop can be worked on easily if ever needed. [Quote]
After I did the soap & bottle trick also improved tremulously more than just the hand rubbing.
I don't remember getting this information sheet with mine but my nephew got the same info as above from their site when he bought his not long ago
Cheers D
I just got the 2" bridle leather strop and couldn't be happier. It took just a few days for it to arrive. Very prompt. Excellent strop with removable hardware and for only $15.99 it was a great value. I would highly recommend.
What I'm hearing is, this is a good place for a beginner like me to get a strop and brush?
I have read that the Frank Shaving brushes are good for the money, but I don't know first hand. The strop I think is worth it. It will do its job and it doesn't cost alot so if you cut it up it isn't that big of a loss. Good luck.
I have very few brushes, but they are all franks shaving brushes. My big 28mm or so silver tip is actually fairly floppy. My little black badger is better, in fact it is my go to brush.
I'm very happy with my big daddy strop. Star strops are a great value for their cost.
I was wanting to get one of their razors, too. However, they are Giesen & Fostenoff or whatever the name is.
I just ordered a burgandy 3 inch bridle leather one today. I hope I get it in a timely manner. I'm hoping for the best.I just stropped my new dovo yesterday on my 2 inch strop (both from srd) and nicked it up.......I hope my second shave attempt goes OK now but I have a few more "shave ready" razors in the mail heading my way. I'm hoping this strop is decent but I'm sure my butchering skills will not help ! :')
Slowing down a little may help. Kind of like learning to type, accuracy first, speed later.
Believe me when I say I messed this up doing it slow Lol speed wasn't the problem. Just beginner problems. I will work through them and if this new strop takes a little bit to get to me it will give me time to learn to strop and repair my strops. But I'm so new at this that speed isn't going to be a problem for awhile !
Dont worry ,I have done it all the wrong way, Flipped my straight into the leather. Didnt hold it level ,nicked the edges,,,,If you can do it wrong I have already been there done that:banghead:. This produduct has held up. Dont get me wrong I dont like to fail. But if you or anyone else can learn from my mistakes. I will MAN up and tell about it. I already messed up my new Dovo Bismark and put too much pressure on it and put slice marks vertical up the blade, then tried to sand it off and gripped my sandpaper the wrong way and sanded off the Gold wash off the top....get the idea?? Its a great first strop..
Sounds like what I need.
A couple of good tips I have picked up here if you are carving up your strop. Get a piece of newspaper and fold it up to the width of a strop and practice on that, or use a blunt butter knife on your leather strop until you feel confident enough to try your razor.
