What do you guys think about this strop?

So a friend made this strop for me, i thought it was awesome and very nice work, my only concern is that the leather seems kinda thick and its really stiff, i read somewhere that stiffness and thickness are both desirable

also im getting my first straight razor from Douglas cutlery in a couple week :y

That's a very nice looking strop and some fine craftsmanship. The thing to check is to see if the strop is flat, side to side. Not bowed in the center, top side, or vice versa. If it's relatively flat, and since it's hard, then you should be fine using an x-stroke when stropping. That way you make contact with the strop across the whole blade.

Thinner leathers like Roo, my preference, are a little more forgiving in the x-stroke or heel leading with less "x" stroke motion, but you'll get the stroke down with some practice.

Maybe you might want to keep this put away until you learn to strop properly so you don't damage it learning as it does look nice a nice effort went into it and it would be shame to damage it learning

Thanks for the thoughts and tips! and i will surly keep you guys updated with how well it works once i get my straight razor, and of course this strop i wont use until in confidant with my stroping i actually have another one like this one, made by the same person, with no designs for practice,

I think the thickness and stiffness comes down to personal preference - I like a very soft thin leather - I feel it follows the edge better and eliminates the need for x strokes etc. I also prefer a very light draw - some like a more grippy feel... Hope it works for you as well as it looks!!!
