Thanked: 0strop flaking/raising up
Hi. I'm new to the straight razor game. I'm female and I've been trimming, styling and shaving my husband for the last 7 years. He bought me a great razor, strap, and conditioner for Christmas. I've been trying to condition and break in the strop. I use mostly bottle method with fromm conditioner. My question is this. Is it normal for areas of the strip to raise up and chip off while stropping? I Have to condition for the areas to at least lay back down, but it comes right back when stropping again. Is this normal? Something that will eventually wear away with use? I can't help to think it is damaging to the blade to strop on such rough leather.
Strop: Illinois 827
Conditioner: fromm
Razor: Dovo Solingen 100 581 5/8"

and the weird part is, that the direction the flakes pull up from the leather is the opposite way i run the razor so know I'm not hacking into it with the blade. I do the weight of the blade only, as flat as possible in a z pattern roughly 30-50 times both ways.Last edited by myhubbydoesntgettoshave; 01-09-2015 at 01:21 AM.

Thanked: 41Is that an illiinois 827 Russian strop? If so mine is rough like that also, don't know if it's normal but you aren't the only one experiencing that. I've used a bit of neetsfoot oil on mine with no real change. It still seems to do the job. Hope that helps

Thanked: 0That is the side facing out. Inside has multiple notched symmetrical lines. It has a second linen part I haven't used yet.

Thanked: 11I think you are stropping with blade at an angle- cutting the leather and hurting razor (or are you leading the edge?). Go see video on stropping, razor blade just follows so gently the spine... Look in the library.. or in the stropping section

Thanked: 0If I am doing it wrong, what can I do to fix the damage to the strop? Also, Is it ok to keep using this one to sharpen my razor?

Thanked: 11I wouldn't use it. May well be fixable. Read this info from the library, read the links also:

Likely can be repaired but read all before doing anymore damage..Last edited by Pringr; 01-09-2015 at 02:04 AM. Reason: wrong link
