Where to get .5 micron CrOx paste?

I see on SRD they are out of stock. I did see something on Amazon, Green Chrome Oxide Compound, 6 oz. - Sharpening Stones - Amazon.com

Seems like it might be .5 micron due to the Q&A, but wondering about quality. Any other recommendations for sources?

I have a 2.5" wide black webbed and leather strop from SRD. Should I use this on the black webbing (I think a video from Lynn said I could), or should I use the rough side of the leather?

I'm thinking of getting a 3" bench or paddle strop, as I think it'll take away some of the variables with learning to strop well. I liked the modular paddle strop from SRD, but alas, it is out of stock too. :( I was thinking I could use the strop I have for pasting, and the bench/paddle for day to day stropping.

Suggestions?

If this is the one you're talking about I'm about 99% sure it's .3. there's a chance I'm wrong though. Did a quick search everywhere and its either discontinued or out of stock. Sorry brother.

oh but good sir is in luck because one person would find verry hard to use one of those crayones up in his lifetime and I just happen to have one. so if he would like to send me his address i would like to send him an oz of it and that should last him a lifetime

Don’t know about either of those, I have only used SRD crayon, Hand America Spray and Liquid and powder from Kremer Pigments.

Unless it says it is pure or 99 percent it probably is not. Once you apply Chrome Oxide to a substrate, you will never get it all off. So choose wisely.

Most Chrome Oxide sold for polishing contains other abrasives larger than Chrome Oxide.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with Chrome Oxide is purchasing paste that is not pure Chrome Oxide, Second is applying to a hard substrate and Third is using too much pressure.

It is not expensive and a life time supply so buy only quality Chrome Oxide that has been used for stropping razors.

If you want to experiment, make a paddle strop from a 3in piece of foam core, dollar store foam core is rougher paper and works better. Finger paint on 3 in x’s.

Impure Chrome Ox will leave a rough edge, as will excessive pressure.

You might want to do a bit more research on the Formax crayon

That is for buffing, and it is not near pure enough for stropping a finely tuned SR

There's also the option of .3 micron lapping film.

I personally like .50 micron diamond spray, because it is less messy. What I do is use a linen strop other than the one I use every day to put this stuff on, because I only use it for touching up.

Yea, a good finisher with paper cushion, if not use with pressure or excessive laps, but not the same.

After hundreds of years, guys are still using Chrome Oxide for a go to paste, probably because it works…so well.

Will calm a harsh edge and add a bit of keenness, if needed.

Don’t know that stuff. Ask them.

A lot of the “Chrome Oxide Powder” sold is, rebranded Kremer Pigments.

Just buy direct and know you bought quality. It is more than 10 people will need in a life time, give some to your friends.

Sorry about that. It's what I have been using did not realize it had been discontinued. I have a bottle and still have about half of it left. I would have more but I experimented with different stropping mediums-leather, linen, balsa.

Thanks! That explains how the powders are used.

That is how I do it, except make the X’s from edge to edge and let it dry as X’s with just a bit more Chrome Ox maybe 2 coats.

I lay out the X’s by measuring and with pencil lines, but that’s just me.

The strop in the foreground is pasted with an SRD stick, the other is with Kremer powder, both work equally well, on Polyester Canvas, sailcloth.

What I figured and so much for that.

Yea… probably good stuff but, like I said, once you put it on, you can never get it all off. So make sure of the purity.

Quality Chrome Oxide is the go to paste for razors, then you can go from there if you wish.

I don't think I am experienced enough to discern any difference in the shave quality yet. I wanted to see if the difference can be seen with magnification like that random deep scratch from cross contamination on a clean fine grained bevel.

I have read so much lately I can't remember from where but I thought I read the smallest CROX was labeled .5 but could have down to .3 in the mixture and .5 being the biggest particle size depending on quality.

I would think the next smaller size of .3 CROX would be advertised all over the place as the next latest and greatest for SR user seeking that ultimate shave.

I lightly pasted up a new TI paddle with the so-called .3 last night and am working the oil in a bit for a couple days before I give it a try. If I think I can see something I will try to post it.

Good Chrome Oxide will polish off some stria and not leave new stria, it is about 30K in grit equivalent.

If you want finer go to Nano Diamond, CBN, Cerium or Ferrous Oxides, depending on what you are trying to achieve.

Chrome Oxide will generally smooth an edge, though it can add some keenness, the substrate and pressure will affect the edge.

Always use lite pressure and let the Chrome do the work, less is more, you do not need much, in application and pressure.

I will not show my first SRP .5 CrOx sprayed paddle for it made Brunswick pool/billiard tables envious and jealous and was great for cross contaminating everything. :roflmao

I've got some CrOx coming, and will give it a try as part of my refresh on the Dovo. Will report in a separate thread my results.

Ah, I was looking for the crayon and it was out of stock. I've got some coming (from a member who had extra).

Appreciate the video, as you can't have too many videos on stuff! :)
