Recently I realized I'd gone a very, very long time on my current strop without a single nick. I know because when I buy them I write the date on the back. It's not like I have been trying to set a record, but today it struck me that this "new" strop is showing its age very nicely, seems wonderfully "broke in" and it's fun to use… and doesn't have a single nick.
What's the longest you've gone without nicking a strop?
After a disastrous start, 2 and a half years and counting on a nice vintage Koken.

With the information available today & a little practice you should never nick a strop.
This should be an interesting thread. I'm still kind of a newbie, I shave once a week, I'm up to 30+ shaves, and just noticed a tiniest nick in my SRD modular strop and I don't even think its broken in yet. I think one of the cool factors in this art is the longevity of the tools we use. it'd be interesting to hear from the veterans on how long they've had there strops. Does anyone have one that has tested father time?
I've had vintage strops that were probably 50 years old or more when I got them and they were in flawless condition. I've even gotten NOS pieces still in their wrappings that were probably equally as old.
The strop I have been using almost exclusively for the past year or so is a black latigo strop. Im happy that I havent nicked it yet. I think the heavy draw of this strop helps keep things in control lol.
I don't own a strop I don't nick up. We're not talking big nicks are we.............:shrug:
Same as Lynn. There's not one single strop I own that doesn't have a small nick or two. That's just how I roll. I'm a bit pragmatic with this stuff. It's just a tool for me and it gets a workout.

Since I have two new Scrupleworks strops on the way, I am reluctant to put any negativity out there. It will only ruin my day.

the nick on my strop is probably just bigger than a grain of sand or the size of a flake. I can't even take a good picture of it to show you. that said and reading this thread, I'm glad I got that out of the way. there will probably be more to come, but if Lynn still nicks his strops, I think I'm doing alright.
I was going at it this morning, like I'd worked in a barber shop, suddenly noticed...Attachment 196525SRD Bridle, made it almost exactly one month. Officially knocked the wind out of my sails. Fortunately, more a nick than a slice, a nice reminder to take it slow. Another notch in the belt, onward the adventure continues.
I have one with a small nick and one without. The next time I strop a razor, I will probably have two strops with nicks. Just saying.
I usually put about one tiny nick just in the edge of a strop about once a year or once every two years. There's usually a reason for it, like a distraction or a razor that I should've tightened the scales on before stropping it .
If I get a new strop, I just put a nick in it right away...seems to take the pressure off and future damage is reduced....;)

Flipping it away from you (over the spine) was just counter-intuitive for me when thinking about drawing it "back".
I use a hanging strop. No Mentor and only videos. Yeah I nicked that one up good, still useable. So I made it another 6 months no nicks and rewarded myself with a new Big Daddy strop, Went a year without a nick, So I ordered myself a Scrupleworks strop. Placed the order and nicked my strop. Bad Karma thread, might as well just go nick the fanciest nicest strop I will ever own and call it a day.

It will happen but I aint looking forward to it. This post just slowed my stropping. Tension on strop, lap count, correct flip, lose count or concentration. The newer you are the less muscle memory you have equals more nicks.
I've nicked all the strops I've used, which total up to three. I have one now, a nice Scrupleworks, and it has been worked over nicely. I have no scruples when it comes to strops. Still works fine though.
When I focus well and don't try anything new and fancy mid stroke while stropping a kamisori, that is.

My previous 3 strops all got nicked, sliced , diced and glued but since I bought my Kanayama 90000 I have not nicked it and its been about a year I think.
The reason being is the pure concentration and will power I put into it. I call upon the ancient Gods to guide my hand :hmmm:
I also find that stropping daily gets the old muscle memory working well.
If I'm not in the groove or the stars are not in alignment then I will just say **** it , walk away man walk away.
I think about 2 weeks, was my first strop though... It has 3 in it, have had it 6 months. The latest was only recently too :gaah: Not sure what happened...
I nicked my current strop in the first couple of days. Then nicked it again. Fortunately they are on the edge, at the end of blade travel, so i just adjusted the length of my stroke so that I don't hit them. As clumsy as I am, I try to stick to decent but affordable strops. No $150-$200 strops for me. :(
I cut my first strop 3 years ago 2 times , then i watch mr Lynn Abrams video . I will never forget theese word - fast is not the key , steady rithm is the key .
Since then i try many things , stroping techniques . I love the X stroke . But never again i cut strop 1 or 2 times nicks , so tiny that they dissapear with vigourous rubbing . Till this very present day i never rush my stroping . It accelerates it self slowly with my experience but i never go for 50 hits in the minute .
It never takes me more that 5 or 6 minutes to make 120 - 150 - 200 hits . im not count them , i always try the edge , in honing also .
All this never stops me to strop for an hour or so when i got time for my preciouss beautys . :rock:
