Tony Miller Strop

Just picked this up from another site, saw, "Miller" and assumed it was Neil, really wanted something to remember him by.

So it turned out it is a Tony Miller Strop, just got it, beautiful construction, the linen (which is very soft and pliable, thinking of the Kanayama thread) and the leather is gorgeous, already did a few laps with a razor and it is obviously a superb strop - quite pleased.

I'll have to search some info about Tony Miller....

The strop feels really superb, great construction, good wide leather that is very supple, has that sheen and the razor hums on the strop.

I think not. Tony lives in Maryland and Neil lived in England.

I have a Tony Miller pasted 4 sided strop that is fantastic for touching up a blade.

Neil's strops are works of art. I really miss Neil.

Tony lives around Amish country if I remember correctly and his website is "The Well Shaved Gentleman, Heirloom Razor Strop Co"(google is your buddy) Years ago the Amish guys were helping him with the leather work. Might still be. Not sure.

Tony used to sell hones too. Eschers, Thuris, cotis...... the whole shebang but he got away from that AFAIK.

Your strop looks like horsehide, his latigo is brown. I also have two of his strops. I got him to make a horse/latigo/linen for me years ago. He had it in production like that for awhile but discontinued it because some guys had a problem with the 3 components on one hook. :shrug:

Nice guy, makes a great strop. His linen, what I have, is a lot like that on Neil's strop. At least on my copy. His horse is different. Neil's is thinner yet more supple than any I've seen and not as slick. A bit of draw on Neil's because of the treatment he gave it. Neil's is also dark like Tony's latigo. Anyway, you have a good strop there.

What a coincidence this was posted today.
I have been wanting one of Tony's strops for a very long time. Every time I looked at the website it said that he was waiting for hides to become available from the tannery. Well, after what seemed to be an eternity, the 3" fast bridle Old #2 was available on Monday. I immediately ordered it. The package just came. I haven't even taken the strop out of the plastic bag yet. All I san say is that il looks amazing! Im sure that it was worth the wait.

Interesting - Old No 2 - that's the one I have - thanks for the info!

I have a Tony Miller fast bridle. For me, its all I think I'll ever want or need. I love it. Its a nice thick slice of leather and the surface is absolutely flawless. Very high quality. I'm sure you're gonna love it.

I also have a TM strop. My favourite by far, even above my Kanayama

I also have 2 Heirloom strops.

An 3" Artisan Old #2, which is the friggin' bees knees... my favorite strop, period. And very fast.

And a 2.5" Original Old #2. Also a fantastic strop. I keep CoX on the linen side of it.

I dont think you can go wrong with one. The craftsmanship is awesome!

Tony is a member here though he hasn't posted for a long time. He was the original custom strop maker when this site first started and before. The business was taking over his life so he scaled back some.

I have his #1 horse and it's a very substantial high grade strop. Tony's quality is top line in every respect.

I agree with everything above. They are of excellent quality.

For anyone interested in one of his strops, please be aware that not all of his strops are available all of the time. He makes them in batches depending on what leather he has available and, I suppose, what he feels like making. They are worth the wait.

Was just examining the strop - really is a beautiful piece of work. I wrote the seller to find out if it's leather or horsehide - I think it's leather, feels exactly the same as my Kanayama - just wider and much longer. The linen on the back of the strop is stiff, superb material, is there a treatment he applies to the linen?

Kanayma is horsehide BTW. I don't think he treats his linen.

I've wanted a Miller for some time now myself. Went to Tony's site early on and still it says he only ships States side.
Maybe if I am on an extended Palm Springs retreat I will be able to order one.

Here is my old triple Tony Miller and my Neil Miller. See how much thicker the TM is than the NM. Not better, nor worse, just different. Note the wear on the TM. Lot of miles on it, and a lot more still to go. :) The Kanayama 80k is thicker than the Tony Miller BTW.

I had mine shipped to my Mom in SC and when she visited here in September, she brought them up here with her......
I planned ahead.....lol

I'd get another one in time or as needed.

All of the websites indicate that strops aren't available, but will be in the future. I'd really like to pick up a 3" latigo of his. Is he only doing commission work now or something?

I would venture to say that most of the Heirloom strops are steerhide. Both my Artisan and Original strops from him are, yet they feel very different from each other.

I love my TM strop, it's my preferred daily go-to. I too wished I would've purchased a NM strop years ago, time flies and we never know what's around the next corner. Neil's spirit shall live on here in SRP though, otherwise it's all just rubbish.:)

Phrank, I think you won't be disappointed with your new strop, hope it serves you well for years to come.

Yeah, even years ago he would list what was available week to week. It wasn't like you could always get a horse, or a latigo, or a 3" whatever. He would put up a notice that this, that, or the other was going to be available and it didn't stay long.

The trick is to keep going back to his site until what you want is announced and get your order in pronto. You snooze you lose ........ :shrug:

I recently posted a thread looking for a strop as an upgrade for a Star Shaving strop I own. My budget was short, and I was considering several different strops. I had wanted a Tony Miller strop since coming on this forum and seeing them around 18 months ago, but either I did not have the cash when they were available, or the other way around.
On instinct, I went to his site, and lo and behold, the 2.5" Plain Vanilla was available. On the strength of my long time desire for one, as well as the reputation he has in the shaving community, I immediately purchased one.
It is the absolute finest strop I have ever held or used. There is literally no comparison. My old strop was, and is, serviceable, and I use it for certain razors, but Tony's strop is a work of art, and a high quality tool.
Keep in mind, the Plain Vanilla is a strop Tony refers to as a "second". He will not even put his stamp to these strops because he considers them nowhere near the quality of the strop that you have purchased.
I can tell you that I am blown away by this strop, and when it comes time to get another strop, I'll save my pennies and watch his site like a hawk. I sincerely hope he continues in business, because one of his Heirloom strops is now the next one I'm dreaming of.
Congratulations on what I am absolutely certain is a very fine, high quality strop.

Love my TM horse hide strop. I have tried numerous other brands and other TM strops and this is by far my favorite. Don't know how to explain it other than, it just feels right.

I own a TM strop as well. When I did All my research on here what strop to get TM strops just popping up and popping up. His strops are highly regarded here and well they should be. I very glad I purchased mine.

Just placed an order for two of his entry level strops for my two straight razor shaving sons. The oldest - never went to straights, he sticks with the DE. It will keep them off my strops anyway!

Great idea. Lots better quality than the majority of entry level strops.

My Tony Miller 'Fast Bridle' strop arrived couple of days ago and I've had a couple of days to give it some test runs.
Impressions: sturdily-made components with some premium hardware, handles and material(s). 3-inch wide smooth, slick leather component with a nice draw that just exudes 'quality.'
The woven fabric component has a very nice feel as well .Standard procedure for most razors: 25-30 linen/35-50 leather for pre-shave.
Overall, a very good first impression.
