thinking of making a fabric strop

Looking for a little project. Plenty of ideas have already been shared here. I've done some research elsewhere as well, especially for design ideas. Polyester and cotton/canvas are two materials that seem to be commonly used for a fabric strop. Others have talked about sail cloth (difficult to procure in my area).

I saw some affordable cloth at hobby lobby that looks interesting. 70% polyester and 30% cotton. This is typically used for black-out drapery.

Assuming it has a nice tight weave and is a heavier-weight material, do you think this would be a viable option?

I think the issue is sewing or sealing the edge in such a manner that the strop remains flat and unencumbered. I think the type of material you are wanting to use falls into the category called webbing. There are many differ types or weave and threads for webbing.

Don't remember the web site but I ordered 2" heavy cotton webbing on line very inexpensive. Search 2" cotton webbing. I think it was out of California.

I seem to remember someone posting about making one out of denim. Maybe I am crazy though. I know some think I am....

C68, crazy you are not. Do a search and you will find a number of posts about denim strops and the making of them. IIRC there might be something about that in the Library (a great go to source.)

You want canvas, because of the interlocking weave. You can cut canvas and the edge will not unravel. Hobby Lobby has cotton canvas, and most fabric stores carry Polyester Canvas, sailcloth for about $10 per yard 36X45 inch piece.

Pellon fabric interface, stiffener is also a great strop substrate. It is a paper/fabric product that has no woven structure and holds paste very well with no integral grit like leather or balsa, works great with nano grits like CBN. It is available at all fabric stores, Wal-Mart & Hobby Lobby.

Most fabric stores have 50 percent sales all the time, check their websites. Denim works, but frays easily and must be sewed or glued, creating a seam.

I bought a few rolls back in the day to use as a generic substrate for abrasive testing (pastes,sprays etc) it does fair for a linen substitute also.cheers.

Which one I looked through the site didn't find anything I would use for stropping

If you are looking for linen, something like this might do (http://www.attwoollsmanufacturing.co...-flax-webbing/), also known as (english) straining web and should be available (or could be sourced by) saddlery shops
