Dose anyone have any experience buying strops on etsy. And if so how do they compare quality wise.
I do. I bought a Chromexcel Horsehide Barbers Strop from @Drygulch Leather Works. It is a piece of art and I couldn't be happier. Not only that, it gave me a chance to support a fellow forum member
He is a member on this forum, as well as, another I subscribe to.
Here is his Etsy link for the strop I purchased from him.
They look pretty nice.... and by the comments a great product!
If I was in the market for a strop, I'd consider getting one from him.
Really it's a crapshoot on etsy for many things.
Strops are relatively easy to make if you know how to work with leather. Also any good quality leather can make a good strop. So most likely your are safe buying one on etsy. The only concern I would have is if you are buying a 3 in wide strop is that if the leather is not thick enough you will get cupping ( which is when the sides of the strop slightly fold up cause them to be higher then the middle
I made one once but I kinda destroyed it. I have plans to make another at some point but for know I feel it's best to just buy a good one.
I don't think making a strop is too complex so, if the length, width, thickness, materials, and overall style work for you, you will probably be happy.
I've found Etsy is a great place to buy many things.
I agree completely about @Drygulch and his strops. I know him from another forum that we're both members of, and he actually loaned me a W&B and one of his strops to try out to see if straight shaving was right for me. Completely class act, and his strop was top-notch. LOL he didn't even complain when I sent it back with a few nicks in it. I sent him a Frederick Reynolds hollow to loan to the next straight shaver looking to give it a shot. I can't recommend his work enough
