Default leather finish for new strop

I am looking to make a new strop for my Autostrop razors. Since the original strop is 1/16-in thick, which would make it a 4-ounce leather. I was wondering what finish or treatment would be the best for this purpose. Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Regards - Walt

Veg tanned works well, you can buy it already made for strops. https://www.artisanleather.co.uk/raz...ches-wide.html

    1/16 inch thick?
I think I'd be looking into Roo Leather. That stuff is thin and strong!

Thank you for your suggestion. I decided to order from here: Leather Side Piece Veg Tan Split Medium Weight 24 X 24 Inches 4 Square Feet. I'll let you know how it works out for me.

I also went with your suggestion for kangaroo leather. Genuine Leather Hide Kangaroo Skins Silver Craft Material Upholstery Fabric 969. I'll use it and the veg tanned leather and make a comparison of the two.

I agree that kangaroo would be very strong and a good choice. I had one where the surface looked like pigskin but that usually only comes paper thin, 2oz or so to use as purse or wallet linings.

Kangaroo skin strength, very good. But due to the fact that its structure is not smooth, it is not suitable for razors. And I tried to Polish it. It's useless

Thanks for the advice . . . . but the leather is on its way. Hopefully I'll be able to return it if it doesn't work.

Well, the strop project is on hold for now. The leather that I received was unacceptable for the job. The veg tanned was at least an ounce too heavy and the kangaroo was much too supple and flimsy. I am trying another supplier and being very specific about the requirements. Their shipping estimate is about a week away. Maybe I'll be third time lucky

    Walt,

You could contact the Horween Leather Company in Chicago, you may be able to buy a piece of Cordovan shell off-cut, shell is much thinner than a lot of leathers.
