Hi all,
I'm looking to get hold of some chromium oxide for a paddle strop I'm making. Most chromium oxide powders I've seen for abrasive purposes seem to be 0.5 micron. Do they come in other grits, or is all chromium oxide this grit rating by default? The reason I'm asking is that I have not found any local suppliers of abrasive chromium oxide, but have found some sold as pigment powders and cosmetic coloring powders. Would these be fine to use for stropping?

I believe .5 is a standard abrasive size, at least for honing use in general.
I would not use the pigment, as this is not graded for size. It is dissolved in solvent or applied dry, and size does not matter to the artist...
To get CrOX that is suitably graded I'd get the stuff from Hand American or SRD, or you might check in the classifieds for fellows who have lifetimes worth of the stuff that they sell off in packets for a very reasonable price. Some people might have some sitting around and will let you know in this thread.
