You could always put a 1X4 over it first, then drive on the board.

Next time you might try treating your strop with fish oil. then you can get the cat to lick it off.....:dropjaw::rofl2:
I did something similar when i was working on leather for a different project. What I did to remove the oil...
Wrap in newspaper, then a towel. Lay it on a flat surface (floor work well) and add weight....I used law books and bricks. Every day I would change out the newspaper or the towel it it soaked though. It left me with a very soft non-oily peice of "oiled leather" it did take about 2 weeks to do.

well what i did was
soak in a tub of hot water for 10-15 minutes
then wash with shampoo (in water)
i dont think this is the right way to do it.
But after hanging to dry for a few days the strop is soft and no longer oily
(I assume different oil may be easyer to dissolve in water so its not something i recomend)
