Recommendations on ONE Paste for Paddle Strop

Hello there -

I can't quite find the answer I'm looking for. I got a small paddle strop for travel, and I can only use ONE paste with it. I have: 0.3u Cr2O3, 0.2u Fe2O3, and TI white paste. The first 2 are self-explanatory, and the TI is supposed to be 2u Al2O3 + diamond that is described as having a ~10K grit equivalent. I have no experience with the TI, and it has mixed reviews around here from what I can see. The razors I'll carry are finished on Jnats. Travel will be ~1-2 weeks at a time.

What say you?

For travel, I'd go with the TI 2u; from among the choices given. It can sometimes be a pain to apply evenly as it tends to clump. Applying some gentle heat helps.

Going outside the choices, Dovo black (~1u) in the block form, the one that comes packaged with the "3u" red block.

I would say none. You don't need it.

1 After japanese finish why should you go to paste?
2 while Travel you try to avoid stuff which will occupied more space . Paste will mess up too much place.
3. Just have small barber hone will do the job.

Well, I have this paddle strop that I will be taking. I might as well paste one side with something, don't you think? Looks like I'll go with the TI. It's just that it's kind of a one-time deal. Once you use something, you can't change, I guess....

I find Cr2O3 gives a smoother edge after the Nakayama. OTOH: Cr2O3 used after the Escher produces very similar results.

Quality of Nakayama may be is questions mark.after escher no reason at all.what to improve?
I would love to see your Cr203 strop's pictures Kees.

I have always said if I were limited to only one paste it would be the CrOx...

It is a vintage loom strop with peau de suede leather onto which I applied Puma chromium oxide paste.

Nakayama I don't think is the problem: it does improve the Y/G Escher's edge but leaves the edge a bit harsh. I have come to prefer a chromium oxide finished edge.

Kees Harsh edge from chro2 . Tells me your are using a lot chro2 . similar to sharpening. Thick layer of chro2 in fact will sharpen edge after 50-100 strokes. I do have chro2 stone. Gsrp member give it to me.i have used and test it .
I used to use chro2 in couple paddle strops.
Never able to find improvement after escher. Let me explain this a little better.
chro 2 in fact will improve the edge but that edge brakes down after couple shaves.( that is what i mean no need it. you are taking edge from properly honed level to almost over honed stage)

if you use less chro2 and it will do similar job as lather side of the strop.

i would highly recomend TI rasoir.it leaves a soft smooth and sharp edge and is overlooked why i don't no because its exallant stuff. i feel its leaves a smoother edge than cro.ox. also touches up a razor with out need of hone.

Personally, I would go with Glen's suggestion. Go with the CroOx.

Thanks all. As I mentioned, this setup is for travel. I may be out for some time (weeks), and I may carry different razors (honed differently) each trip. I need to carry a leather (paddle) strop, and I'd rather not weigh myself down even with a barber hone. So, this is a good setup for me, and I'll decide either Ti or Cr - both have merit, I think.

If I had to recommend just ONE paste, I'd say Chromium Oxide (Preferably in the Crayon form they sell on SRD) since it only takes up a little space when traveling... However, once you apply it you don't need to carry it around with you..

Also, Chromium Oxide is generally regarded as less "harsh" than most other mediums, so there's that benefit, and if you overstrop on a diamond loaded strop, you can damage the edge faster than overstropping on Chromium Oxide (In my experience... YMMV). Another benefit would be that it is easy to overload diamond spray onto a medium, but CrOx (again, just my experience with the crayon) works quite well at any loading level, you just need to vary your amount of strokes.

I am a fan of CrO, but YMMV

I haven't used the TI paste, but I've found iron oxide to be pretty harsh as a finisher, so yeah, it would be between Cro or the T paste.

it realy is'nt harsh i have used it for some time now and the edge is as smooth as coticule it is good stuff and thats why i recomend it as the only paste you would need. i used every paste i can think of and they all pritty good but ti paste seems to sharpen and smooth . the sprays are nice to as well as cro.ox but ti paste makes up for extra sharpness.

+1. I don't carry a hone on trips, but I do carry a paddle with TI on rough leather. If an edge starts to dull, 5 swipes does the trick.

yes it does the job very quikley. it was one of the paste i never realy gave much thought to. the first time i tryed it i was very impressed.i use it on canvas strop .

You know it you want to take something else that is pasted. It is hard to beat Balsa wood, I buy a piece that is 36x3x1/4 and cut it into 8 inch sections. I have one sprayed with Cro-ox and wraped with plastic wrap.These are flat and light so they are easy to carry in luggage.
I also have one sprayed with .5 diamond spray.
Add a strop, 2 razors and this is about all I have ever needed on a trip so far.

Know this thread is old, but I have a similar question as I am preparing a 2-sided travel strop I was wondering if I should go for the .25 diamond or CroOx on the pasted side...
