So... if you had an old vintage strop that was really dry and stiff and you kept putting neatsfoot oil on it and rubbing it in till you could see oil stains on the back side of the strop and when you strop a razor on it there is absolutely no draw what so ever. Its like running the razor over a very slick piece of glass. I tried rubbing some prairie soap creations lanolin soap lather into it without any improvement. Have I ruined the leather?
I don't know if it would work but I would get a small bag of cat litter and lay it in a bed of the stuff and then cover it with more. Over a few days the litter ought to draw the excess oil out .... I think it would. :hmmm:
It's worth mentioning that it's absolutely imperative that you keep the cat away from the tray while all this is going on.:D
Try laying the strop face down on newspaper or towels and roll with a rolling pin.
Cornstarch applied to both sides will remove a lot of the oil. Works on silk shirts with oil stains. Old Oriental remedy. Leave overnight, then brush off.
You have to be a certain age to know what a rolling pin is don't ya think ? :DQuote:

On a serious note, it's never a good idea to rub soap into leather, regardless of what you read. You wouldn't do it to a Leather Jacket or Leather Sofa, Strops are no different...Only Saddlsoap, follow the directions, and then apply neetsfoot oil, a little at a time and let each application soak in for a day or two before you do anymore...
I would probably just wrap it tight with paper towels (white no printing on them) and put some weight on it. That should draw some out.

What I did, was to use the "strop conditioning" technique that is posted somewhere on here.
In a nutshell.... Whip up a good lather with your brush. Brush the strop with the lather.
Lay strop on a flat surface. using a round object ( I used a wine bottle) (be careful not to use the mold lines!)
rub the lather into the strop. using some good pressure. (be careful of any imprints in the leather, you can rub them out!)
Wipe down the strop, and let hang to dry for 24-48 hours.
I had put so much oil in mine, that I had to do this 3 times before I was able to use it properly. But now it works GREAT!
AND... there is still lots of oil deep inside the leather, so when I start to feel it change, I do the "hand rubbing"
This re-distributes the oils from the pooling surface, to the drier areas.
As time goes on this occurs less and less, but I suspect it will be a very long while before I ever need to oil her again!
Of course, I suppose I could just rub a towel over it to pick up any excess.
Oh, and if its too much work for you, save this strop for razors that you are going to put on the side. a few quick strokes may not help your edge, but the oils deposited on the blade will help to keep it rostfrei for a long while. =)

Laying the strop lengthwise on a flat surface with any kind of absorbent would be useful. To totally (as best you can)remove an oil, you need a solvent. The advice is too late for this strop, but for anyone else looking to apply oil to a brittle strop, consider applying it only to the BACK of the strop. Put the oil on your hand and rub it around on the back of the strop. Don't apply a whole lot at once. Just rub it in from your hand and repeat it a few days in a row. Sneaking up on it this way, and applying it from the back, will prevent the problem described in the beginning of this thread.
