Was it a green crayon? If it was, it sounds like it was chromium oxide, which is an abrasive paste used for touching up or finishing a razors edge.
There is also a white TI paste which is chalk based, which is even finer than CrOx but also abrasive.
You shouldnt paste your daily strop, that should be clean leather, and then have a second strop with your pastes on it for touching up the razor.
You sure it wasn't a stick of Chrome oxide ?
Beat me to it Stubear :) i thought it might be a green crayon :D
Was this a paddle strop? You really should leave hanging strops alone. Abrasives are for paddle strops.

I agree with the razor wielding cat.
I pasted my old hanging strop with white chalk paste on the linen and CrOx on the leather. Its hanging in my shave den so I can use it mid shave if I want to, works really well!
Hello, Big_E:
Forgive me, but I must agree with my friend JMS: Abrasives are not strictly for paddle strops. Rather, they should be used on designated strops, whether paddle or hanging.
I have two hanging strops pasted with abrasives. My strops for everyday use, however, are kept clean.

Obie
I'm just saying, 'cause a hanging strop bends and the coating of abrasive will crack and fall off the surface. No big deal but on a paddle strop, the abrasive stays put for as long as you need it. Which is what paddle strops were made for. But hey, have fun!
