Grandfather's Strops
My dad found these in his garage yesterday, they belonged to his dad who is no longer with us, so its a great find just for the sentimental factor. I have very little knowledge about this kind of strop and couldnt find out much when I did a search. Do any of you guys know anything about these? in particular the hone side, it feels quite hard and is green in colour. I'll probably try lapping it with some wet&dry and see what happens. The instructions say not to drop it or the hone may crack so it's not pasted leather, its something honeish
I'll figure it all out as I go, but just wondering if anyone here could shed any light before I start.
Thanks
Grant

Wow, great find! It is interesting that the directions show both in and out strokes being used on both sides.

Very cool. I wish I could shed some light on them. Still a great find though!

Fantastic find! Don't know anything about them but they appear to be in decent shape. I bet with a bit of TLC they will provide years of service!

The look to be in great condition baldy. Can't help with the hutton brand but I would be willing to bet that the hone is in the range of a barber hone. As for cleaning them up I have a pike strop hone and the instructions for it recommended cleaning the hone side was to use a kerosene or gasoline soaked rag.

I saw a few of these last trip to the antique store. Castel is correct, one side of it is a barber hone, and the other is a stropping surface. Quite the 2 in 1 if you ask me. I would have purchased them if they were in as good condition as yours. Congrats on receiving them!

I also have my grandfather"s strop. From time to time I carefully use it. It is in sound condition and a very good memory.

You might be able to look up the patent number on the side there, maybe it says something about the stones in their application.
Very neat find!
