it was said earlier that the consensus was Ash. I would agree... my dad was a professional cabinet maker for a while, so I know a little bit about woodworking and wood in general... not just spouting off.

Sugar Maple (rock maple) is also excellent for strops. After all, that's what bowling pins are made of. The less figure, the better for this application.
