Can I use the leather conditioner that i use on my horse saddles?

I wanted to know if I can use Montana Pitch Blend leather dressing on a strop. I use it on new saddles so they keep their color and repel water. After reading about strop care essentially i've read you need to keep your strop conditioned so it wont dry up and crack. This conditioner is for all leather products to keep em soft and water proof. This is the url. My question is can i just use this stuff rather than the stuff sold by shaving retailers specifically for strops?

Rub the palm of your hand on your strop before you use it every day instead.

If you are looking to save some money you can rub your palm on the strop every morning before showering and your own oils will condition the strop. Or you can use good old olive oil. A tiny bit in the palm of your hand and just work it into the leather and you will be set. The Montana Pitch-Blend Products I would say to stay away from as the water repellent properties will probably cause it to really want to grab hold of the blade. That has been my experience when I tried a product with a water repellent in it.

I put neatsfoot oil on the rough side of my strop, not on the stropping side.

The purpose of strop dressing, as I understand it, is to modify the draw of the leather more than to protect the leather.

It says the products are for rugged leather. Strops are the opposite really. I wouldn't use that stuff on a strop. There are many better alternatives from your palm, to Bick, to neatsfoot oil and many others.

If you keep your strop indoors, in a climate controlled atmoshpere, Your good to go for quite some time. You don't need to worry about it drying out, and cracking. An occasional rub with the palm of your unwashed hand is sufficient, really.

I'd be cautious about using anything made for boots/saddles and whatnots. It's really kinda of a different game with most strops. (That's coming from a guy who makes his own but that's a different thread) Your palm ought to be good. You can also lather up some shave soap and put it the strop. (Wipe off after awhile of course.) And my personal favorite, because I laugh at myself every time I do it, is to rub your nose the strop...then rub the oil with your thumbs. :)

You are even better off if you have acne!

using your hand like every one else said will condition your strop if you do dress it , your strop will have more draw to it .
