Default have you heard of a rawhide strop?

I recently was reading an ad for a str8 razor and the fellow referred to having honed the razor on a rawhide strop. I've made various things from rawhide, and w of my favorite bullwhips are made of rawhide. Has anyhone here ever seen or used one?

I have not. Seems like it might be a bit coarse for a razor's edge, unless you had spent a LOT of time working it out... but hey, there are so many different ways to do this stuff I won't say it isn't possible. I'm always amazed by what different treatments to leather can do for the feel of a strop... might be worth checking out?

I wouldn't have thought rawhide could be supple enough to make a whip from either, but here it is. One can soak it in water and then use conditioner on it to make it supple, plus mechanically breaking it down also to make it supple. I'm going to have to try it now I guess.

It would depend how smooth and supple it turns out to be without it feeling like cardboard.
