Additions to 'natural' leather to make strop-worthy?

I have a fair bit of fairly high quality 3-4mm veg-tanned leather I got for doing some leatherwork.

Does the natural leather need any treatment or pastes or anything before I make a board or hanging strop with it?

I'm new to this, this would be my first strop; is this one of those situations where I should buy a ready made one first or is it ok to go straight to making my own?

If You have any smooth,supple,unblemed strips of almost any type hide,make your own.
Strops are not IMO rocket science.

If your leather is very high quality you may wish to save it and buy an inexpensive strop to learn on first. After you become accomplished and don't nick a strop any longer you can make yourself a nice strop or strops.
