A travelling Strop

Hi All,
I picked this up on Ebay recentley and though I paid more then what I wanted to, I was intrigued by the idea of fixing up and using a travelling strop, of course like with most things on ebay you cannot see the actual state some items are in until they reach your door.

So I have a problem, the leather is soft and has some very bad nicks in it, when stropping earlier with it the blade kept getting caught and thats when I realised that I had more then likely bought a piece of rubbish.

BUT

I would like to restore this item and put it back to work as part of my travel set, sadly I can not find someobdy with the skills to re-leather this tidy little piece and wondered if you had any suggestions.

Its dimensions are as follows:

Width: 1.2"
The leather length: 10.4"
Overall Length with Buckles: 12.6"

Large nicks should be superglued and rubbed down - smaller ones just rubbed down.

Not a bad idea, but the largest of the nicks has damn near gone right through the leather, which can be actually seen in the picture........hmmmmm.....I may have to load up a better pick.

But yeah I dont mind a bit of glueing and the likes as a stop gap until I can get the leather replaced.

The gluing only works if you have flaps that can be glued. if the leather is simply gone and nicked you can sand it if the nicks are shallow. If they are deep you could cut it down and make a small travel piece if you have a large enough good area.

So what will you keep if you get the leather replaced - a swivel and a D ring - have you considered buying a new one - it's probably the cheaper option.

The swivel and D ring is all that I would be left with if I had the leather replaced, sadly UKRob is right in that I could prove cheaper to purchase a new strop of similar size...if still available.........we live in a throw away world sadly.

This little strop cost £13 and came with a small chrome soap tin, so in the long run I probably would of done better to have bought a new cheap strop.

Do you have some pictures of the actual stroping surface?

For want of a better word,that is a very enexpensive pce of leather,make or buy a new strop IMO

Im guessing that it could replaced with an old leather belt that could de adapted? its a small strop and I bought it from ebay thinking it would work well in my wash kit, saves me dragging the main strop out.

Tandy might me your best bet for getting a new piece of leather

I would sand the back side with varying grits of sandpaper until I had a fine suede finish. Might work, might not. If money is a problem, it's worth a try.

Have an 'old styled shoe repair ' shop in your town. You'd be surprised at how much these guys know and how reasonably they work. Take it in and show him what you want.

That's a good idea. Maybe they have a scrap piece of cowhide laying around and can fit it right on the rings for you.
