Waxy substance on strop
I have a 3 inch black latigo strop that I use daily, even on days when I don't shave cause I need the practice. I guess its been about 3 weeks since I got it and this morning I was stropping and noticed a kind of whitish waxy substance on the strop. I wiped it off and continued on stropping. I have never put anything on this strop other than warming it up with my hand before I strop. Any idea what this stuff might be? I'm kinda thinking its a leather treatment coming out of the strop. Should I just keep wiping it off or clean the strop with soapy water or something?

It's just the way the latigo strops are treated. Mine did the same...just keep wiping it and eventually with time and use that will go away:)

My homemade bridle strop had red wax that came off of it for a while. No biggie.

And so does my Illinois 361. Glad to know I can ignore it.

Interesting. My latigo didn't do that, but at least I know not to panic if I do end up making myself one and this happens. That's one of those 'somewhere down the line' projects.
Thanks!

No matter what Cangooner says, it didn't come from my nose.

Rubbing it frequently with your palms will also help. The natural oils on your skin work wonders for strop maintenance and break-in. I have a black latigo that I have only used sparingly and it is sort of waxy, so I've been giving it a good rub-down every couple of days as I have decided to break it in more and start using it more often.
