"Hello, I'm MapleLeafAlumnus, and I'm addicted to stropping."
Don't reflect too hard when stropping, or you may end up reflecting upon how one strop became two shorter ones.... :D
But yes, stropping can be very relaxing. Many repetitive actions are: for example, I am an avid crocheter and find it a very meditative and relaxation-inducing activity.
James.
Not relaxing. You have to concentrate to avoid nicks and get a good result. But is sure is a satisfying job.
I agree James... He Ain't Lyin'! - YouTube
I don't strop 100 laps because the blade likes it but because I do.
I find it to be incredibly relaxing and meditative. I love stropping.
No I don't, but I do find honing to be relaxing.
Stropping, honing, shaving are all relaxing to me. I thinks its the conentration needed to do said task clears your mind of all the BS we have to put up with in todays modern society.
+1 on what Scookum said.
I have not seen nor used a P38 since the mid-60's.
Not quite yet but I think I'm getting there!
I enjoy stropping. I usually strop 50/100 on cotton/leather. From everything I read I probably reach maximum benefit to the blade doing just 30/60, but I do the extra laps because it is relaxing. I have 5 3" strops and using different strops also adds to the enjoyment.
I find the whole process of shaving with a straight razor to be relaxing, from start to finish.
I agree with the "clear your mind" factor, when the mind is not cleared, nicks and cuts can happen. Stropping I love, also reminds me of the old barbershop.
if I'm running late and trying to sneak in a quick shave, stropping is very stressful and in fact, because it's such a poor time to be doing it (because I get a lousy result) I usually wait until I have sufficient time and am in a more relaxed frame.
If I'm all nice and relaxed and concentrate properly on the job, yes, it's very relaxing and unsurprisingly, the end result is miles ahead better.
Being the chronic insomniac that I am, I've been known to count imaginary razor stops in place of sheep.
Sometimes it works.
