Some Habits Never Die

Gentlemen:
Some habits never die in the world of wet shaving with the straight razor. I started with a 2" strop, where I learned to use the X-pattern. Then I moved to a 2.5" strop, and continued the X-pattern. Now I have a 3" strop, as well as the 2/5", and still do the X-pattern. If a 5" strop comes along, I'll probably do the X-pattern on it, too. It's most comfortable for me. I know that, with all the profound happenings around the world, using the X-pattern on a 3" strop is about as important as an ant drunk on Margaritas, but stropping is important stuff in traditional shaving. Tell me, when stropping, do you find yourself with habits that never die?

Yeah...NEVER strop naked!

Yea, I know the feeling. Even though I'm the bigspendur and am so rich I lend Mitt Romney money, I never could get used to lighting my cigars with hundred dollar bills. I still use 20s.

in my youth i started lighting my cigars with 50s, when i got older i switched to the 100s which also great for wiping your butt.
no matter how wide the strop is i still do an x-stroke just feels right...

strop naked, shave naked, be a man for a while :p

I habitually rub my strap with the inside of my wrist.

i shave in the evening between my second and fifth bourbon, any less, too shaky, any more, too sloppy. :shrug:

Uh... yup. To this day no matter how dear the strop.... I nick it! Sigh lol.

Hey is that because every time you get to stropping you have your blade in hand lol? I ask because I do the same thing. And it's because I always forget to rub it when I don't have my razor in hand!

I guess i could put it down but I never do. The wrist seems to work just fine lol.

I shower when I get home from work, at about 6:00pm. This is also when I shave. I admit, I always shave in the buff. I don't go and put on clothes before, takes to long! I gotta get to those whiskers while they're fresh!!! So I guess my habit is shaving naked..... Every time!!! :rock:

LOL - I'll bet 90% of all men shave in the buff! We just don't talk about it... as it's not a picture we wish to paint :). Kind of like how I was divinely conceived. :)

As for shaving, I usually wrap a towel around my waist...not so much to cover my junk, but mainly because it just seems convenient to have a dry towel there held taught to wipe my hands on to dry them.

As goofy as it sounds (and I'm sharing this for no particular reason), I strop after my shave to aid drying the razor...and because I no longer need to dry my hands, my towel will have been hung up prior to stropping ;)

Partly yes but another part of me is also paranoid about getting honing grit from my hand onto the strop. Unfounded of course if I haven't honed but we are talking habits here. :)

Not goofy at all. Some makers recommended post shave stropping for this very reason.

Summoning fire without flint or tinder, now that's odd, Tim. ;)

Who's running? I know from some of the comments we al should be...Habits...Well to buck the trend of all these blokes running around with their tackle flopping around in the breeze, I actually put my socks and jeans on before I shave. It is almost, but not quite, a habit. I'll settle for shorts on a stinking hot day. :)

My odd habit is to light up a cigarette & have a sip of coffee right after lathering my face but before stropping the razor. :shrug:
