What about a Gait Belt? Only 2" wide but that may not matter if you are building a budget strop and when hanging would be well hidden behind the leather. They are 54"-60" long and you can find them brand new for a buck on eBay. Also widely available at any durable medical equipment outift and most pharmacies.
Always trying to think of different ideas and thought this was interesting enough to share.
