I'm guess that's pure sterling silver
Beauty, from the days when a tool was more than just a tool but a work of art also.
Bob
That is probably the coolest thing I ever seen.
Thanks so much for sharing Martin
And then the shaving brush......

OK, posting that brush puts it over the top. I am really jealous now so don't pull anymore bits out of the hat. OTH if you have the matching razor..... Two absolutely top tier finds. Any info on the maker or who owned it originally? Thanks for sharing.
Bob
Well this fine piece certainly got my attention, fantastic! Thanks for sharing. Ken
No idea on the maker or owner i just posted to show spectacular craftmanship from way back, and here a couple more pics for you!
The Razor!

Stunning. I wonder what it would be like to be of means and have tools that resemble jewelry.
Are all of these incredible items heavy?
They look like the have some heft to them.
I almost forgot now we have paddle strop, brush, razor, we need a hanging strop!

It just keeps getting better and better. You are such a tease. If you hear a noise that is me whimpering in the corner. I think you had better buy a lottery ticket with luck like that.
Bob
I am guessing that those were made very specially for someone very special. There almost certainly is a good story behind these pieces...think about the periods that they survived (wars, depression, etc)
I hope someone has the whole story...those incredibly expensive items might be priceless?
I know that you guys frown upon adult language around here but that is farcking awesome.
That whole set is the most ornate thing i have ever seen. Imagine the cost back in 1900.
It was probably like 15.00 for all of it. Appx 2 weeks wages for common folk or something.
Amazing set! That paddle is unbelievable...
Last one.........The shaving mug
Attachment 110604
I did a quick check and found a site that said the average work week in the USA was 59 hours in 1897 and the average yearly wage was $411.00 or slightly less than $8.00 a week. Yea, somebody would have to put in a lot of grunt to pay the freight on that lovely shave kit. Mind boggling really.
Bob
Stone the crows and another one pops up. Shoulda known there was a mug in there too.
Unit
Exactly my point in posting the average wage back then. Totally agree that it was a person from the privileged class that was likely the original owner. The up side is that, without the privileged class the craftsmen that made these would not have been able to show off what extreme talent they had. Nor would we be able, over 100 years later, to be still awed by their talent.
Bob
See! My 7.50 per week guess was damn close!
I have a seven day set of that stuff... Okay, not really... But, idid save your pics seven times...
This is well beyond razor porn. This is kinda like the Venus De Milo.
Absolutely awesome! That kind of craftsmanship is still available but it ain't cheap and you gotta be patient.
I wonder who carved something to make a mould for the casting. Unless it was a one-off for a very wealthy person, there might have been more than one of these casted.
It has always been the extremely well-to-do who have driven the craftsmen to do the very finest work, or in 1897 or earlier, probably any fine work at all.
I have seen current demonstration craftsmen who lament the fact that it takes someone with money to pay them, but then at the same time, they chide the masses for buying inexpensive goods.
