Hi its me again I am starting to learn how to strop doing to slowly as they say but the thing that's messing me up is the counting how many times you strop I know you got to do it between 40 to 60 but I concentrate so much on doing the strop right so that i don't damage the strop that about after 20 I have lost count!! Is there a secret to this counting while you strop if there is can i have it please :rofl2::aargh:
No secret other then when you get the stropping thing down you really won't need to count anymore you will just have a feel for when you hit around where you want to be.
I think once you get comfortable with stropping you will be able to count easier. I honestly just count to 20 and start over and do another 20. Anyway, it does not have to be precise. I am sure a lot of folks do not even count and go by feel.
Don't worry too much about the whole counting thing.
After a while you'll get a feel for when it is done:)
When in doubt, just do a few more, and you should be good!
i still count as im pretty new , i found it easy to say the number twice , one (up) one ( down) ect , i remember thought that 60 times used to seem like it took an hour ..lol
+1, I "say" (think) the number going one way and then the other. After awhile it will be easy for you. I used to do 50 and 50. Now I do that sometimes or it may be 30 and 30 or 40 and 40. Depends on my mood I guess.Quote:

I can never keep count either.
I don't go by feel on the strop. I go by feel on my face.
I just estimate as I go and stop when I think I've done 75-100 passes. From experience, that keeps my razor shaving well.

I always strop 100 laps. It has been helpful with my counting, and now I can count all the way to 250.
When stropping remember..... the razor can't count. If you strop 50 or 60 the razor won't know. If you don't think you've stropped enough do a few more, what can it hurt. The shave will let you know. After awhile you'll just feel it. Happy stropping.
When I hone or strop I count both ways so if I have to stop I can remember which direction I have to resume depending on odds or evens. Down side is I have to divide by 2 to not seem excessive on SRP . ;)
I count. It helps with rythym and makes it seem to take forever! :)
Sounds like we all develop a technique. I count on the away stroke and go up to twenty, then start over, counting in batches of 20 or 10 or 5. I typically have been doing 25 strokes on linen and 50-60 on the hide.

Is it a disaster if you forget whether you stopped on an up or down stroke, or do you just start all over....
Remember, it is important to do exactly the same number of strokes on each side of the blade to prevent an unbalanced blade which may be difficult to shave with! :aargh:

I can relate to what you're going through. I'm just now making progress and I've been at it about 2-3 years. It's just going to come together eventually, trust me. One of the joys of straight shaving besides the best shaves available is knowing what effort it took to achieve them. You give yourself a treat and morale boost every time you do it.Quote:

I count " one, one. Two, two, etc." This is due to 1 being a round trip. 1 up, 1 down. I've done it so much, I couldn't lose count if I tried!
I've always counted while stropping for the daily shave, but can go either way. Normally, if I just honed a blade, I don't count, and usually grab a paddle. You can count in sets of ten if it's easier to remember. End each set with with the proper number, 10, 20, 30, etc...If that helps.

Sometimes I count, sometimes I simply strop "a while".
Regarding stropping the exact number of strokes on each side...that's a joke right? I mean, I try to stay close to even, but because I do not *shave* with the same number of strokes on each side of the blade, it stands to reason that stropping inequality not be over-thought too much;)
I count as fast as I possibly can, and I still can't keep up with how fast I am stropping :nj
I have found that if I blink I miss at least three laps... which screws up my count

I always start on the pull and finish on the push, that way you can only ever strop both sides the same amount.
As far as how many or how long, that can only be answered by your own face.

I used to count, but now my mind wanders on whatever while I strop. I stop when it seems like I'm done.
